Unfortunately, ANY electrical device can catch fire, for many reasons.
Digital STBs tend to generate a lot of heat when working. A situation made worse by the fact they tend to come in relatively small cases (small case = little air inside the box = high temperature). A lot of people compound that problem by stuffing the box into a small hole with little or no space around it.
It is worrying to think that these things can catch fire, but how much equipment do you need left on if you are on holiday? If you don't have fish or an alarm system, you probably only need to leave the Fridge on, together with your freezer (if you have one). If you are planning to record TV to watch when you get home, leave your Digital STB on, but make sure it's well ventilated. The second bonus, if your family is anything like mine, is that with nearly everything turned off, you might save a decent chunk of the cost of the holiday.
