Just had a phone call and when i answered the phone a guy on the other end said " im from your broad band provider and when your on the internet its showing up this end that your computor has a virus and im here to clean your computor from all viruses," at this point i said no thankyou and put phone down. When i dialled 1471 the number was witheld. Am i right in thinking this was someone trying to hack into my computor.

Re: Strange call

You did absolutely the right thing. It is a scam and the criminal at the other end will try and get you to allow remote access to your computer so he can possibly install a control trojan to steal passwords or send spam email from your pc.

Definitely dodgy.

Re: Strange call

What you should have done is take the opportunity to see how long you can waste the scammer's time for, by acting dumb and generally keeping him talking. I had one going for 15 minutes once. I believe others on here have done even better. I had him giving me instructions for finding my way to the relevant menu and options to allow him access, without ever telling him I have a Mac. It was ages before we established that the reason I couldn't see the Start button, was because I don't have one.

Re: Strange call

I too kept one talking for 15 mins pretending to be thick and I have to say they are very plausible and quick to answer questions. After 15 I told him he was talking bullsh*t and I was a PC expert - he hung up, how rude!
