Strange call

Just had a phone call and when i answered the phone a guy on the other end said " im from your broad band provider and when your on the internet its showing up this end that your computor has a virus and im here to clean your computor from all viruses," at this point i said no thankyou and put phone down. When i dialled 1471 the number was witheld. Am i right in thinking this was someone trying to hack into my computor.

Re: Strange call

You did absolutely the right thing. It is a scam and the criminal at the other end will try and get you to allow remote access to your computer so he can possibly install a control trojan to steal passwords or send spam email from your pc.

Definitely dodgy.

What you should have done is take the opportunity to see how long you can waste the scammer's time for, by acting dumb and generally keeping him talking. I had one going for 15 minutes once. I believe others on here have done even better. I had him giving me instructions for finding my way to the relevant menu and options to allow him access, without ever telling him I have a Mac. It was ages before we established that the reason I couldn't see the Start button, was because I don't have one. :D

I too kept one talking for 15 mins pretending to be thick and I have to say they are very plausible and quick to answer questions. After 15 I told him he was talking bullsh*t and I was a PC expert - he hung up, how rude!
