Any VOIP service (eg, Vonage) experience?

I'm considering dropping my Virgin phone line and am wondering if anyone has any experience of using Vonage, or any other non-PC dependent VOIP service.

I'm on VM's 20Mb broadband at the moment and am considering moving up to the 50Mb if this makes any difference.

I'm biased as I work for a VoIP provider (SIP-based), but I love it - free calls with perfect quality to my wife 4000 miles away in the US, for as long as I like. No bandwidth issues as the TG582n router automagically priorities the VoIP line so no matter how hard I hammer it it's perfect. I know of several Virgin customers on our books who've ditched their landline to VoIP and they've not had problems, but everybody is different and we take everybody on a case-by-case basis when testing or setting them up.

Generally, avoid using an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) unless you really like the phone your landline is on at the moment and need to keep the costs down. ATAs are older technology, and not completely compatible with cordless handsets.

At the end of the day, there are a myriad of providers out there. Choose what suits you best, has good call quality to landlines and mobiles, and hits your price point. There are those that operate on a pay-for-what-you-use basis, as well as those that do bundles of minutes and call packages which you may not use, along with a Fair Usage Policy buried in the T&Cs. The choice is entirely yours.
