Speed upgrade
On 27th November I upgraded my speed from M300 to M500. On one occasion only since that date I have actually achieved 500 but the resultus are consistently no better than I was getting before - around 300 - 340.
Is it possible that my hub needs upgrading to cope with the speed increase ?

No, if you have ever seen 500, then your hub can manage that speed. You probably have a Hub3, which can manage up to 600.
How are you measuring the speed?

Re: Speed upgrade
I vary timings of tests ranging from early morning to evening. The upload results have consistently been improved but not the download

Re: Speed upgrade
Upload is rarely an issue as its so much slower than download (unless you are one of the lucky people on a symmetrical FTTP).
The best time to test is normally after 11pm. I dont know anything about the Ookla test, but the TBB test (that we use) is pretty reliable.

Dont Virgin have a speed test that runs directly off your CM ?
I know I was able to do that in the past, but mines a Hub 4, not 3.
Also, I dont think it works in Modem mode, which is what I normally use.

Yes indeed. https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/
If this shows your full speed, but you don't get that speed on your devices, the limit is either in your device or its connection to the Hub.

Re: Speed upgrade
Thank you all for your assistance and suggestions. I will certainly use the virgin test mentioned above, keep records for a few days of different times and results and try and get in touch with someone at Virgin at the end of the week with this additional information.

Thank you I have tried the samknows realspeed test and this shows that the router speed is in excess of my package speed. I have M500 and the router speed on this test is 548. The desktop is 321 (connected by etthernet cable) and ipad 377.
Clearly I need to try and sort out positioning of the hub or something now.

Re: Speed upgrade
If you are getting 321 on an ethernet-connected PC, it's likely the PC itself is the limit

Indeed - I've been on Gig1 for ages now but my PC (in the cellar) was only getting <100 mbps as I was using a 10/100 mini-switch. I put another port in and this jumped to 945 mbps which I'm quite happy with bearing in mind the Hub is upstairs and I self cabled the house with Cat5e so it's not far off the max speed.

Re: Speed upgrade
I have now moved the router. It was possibly too close to the tv and now have over 500 on the ipad. Desk still lagging a bit but as the hub speed is consistently 548 and 549 it is obviously the desktop computer that is the weak link.
Thank you all for your help with this.
