I think you can only do this if you connect your external sound system through the headphone output. Subsequently, you'll only receive sound in stereo.
If you connect via the audio outputs (red/white connectors), then you'll have to adjust the volume via your external sound system.

mines connected via optical on my LG surround sound and yes it controls the tv/home cinema volume once simplink is enabled would be the same on samsung anynet+ and sony bravia home theatre setups

I have a SONY TV & Theatre system and the virgin remote controls the volume on the TV when the Theatre system is off and on the Theatre system when it's on. The V+ box is connected via HDMI
