ntl Home Networking
Hi,
I have searched the forums for any advice on this and just want to check whether the following would allow me to have two computers connected to the internet and share files and printers
On my Windows ME computer (which I have am not getting) I do not have ICS installed. When going to 'Add/Remove Programs' and 'Windows Setup' and then checking the tick box to install it I get an error about not having a network device installed, however I am connected to the internet via Ethernet (SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter) on my ntl 250 Cable Modem.
So, Do I need ICS installed?
If so, how can I stop the error appearing
Is the equipment listed above enough to have 2 PC's on the net sharing files and printers?
Thanks,
Robbie Gray

Re: ntl Home Networking
Yes both routers will work fine.
Don't think you need ICS installed
You'd be able to share between the PCs as long as the domain/workgroup were both the same
and you'd both be able to access the net if it set up right.
Looks ok to me although I'd wireless it meself, you'd need new cards for the PCs though.

Re: ntl Home Networking
As this is not strictly an NTL problem, I have moved it to the Computers and IT forum.

Re: ntl Home Networking
The router you linked to is fine for NTL BB and should come with at least one patch cable. You will need another for the second PC though, not expensive to buy fortunately.
ICS isn't needed if you move to a router as far as I know as it's for Internet Connection Sharing which the router will handle instead of one of the PCs.
Have you tried removing your network adaptor from your hardware profile and rebooting to see if it rebuilds the connection to ICS?
Post the full error message and we can try and help out with it if you want.
Sharing files and printer should be possible as long as you make sure the PCs can see each other on your network and that the files and printer in question are shared.

Re: ntl Home Networking
You don't need ICS with a router because the router IS the ICS. Wouldn't worry.
