Nightshade: A fight against AI

Artists can now fightback against AI companies scraping images from the web without consent and no payment of royalties.

Nightshade poisons the image and can change the behaviour of AI in interpreting images, for instance changing a car into a cow!

Re: Nightshade: A fight against AI

Hmmm.

If you put images on the internet, with unrestricted access to them, why complain that people then use them.

Re: Nightshade: A fight against AI

There are much bigger concerns in the realms of AI/ML than this, especially as we move ever closer to quantum computing

Use can be defined in various ways. If a "system" scapes an image and then uses it outside of the intended rights who do you prosecute if that "system" is a computer programme doing "it's own thing". True it's been programmed but if it's an AI that is "learning" without specifics...?

They use training models the parameters of which are provided by developers

If you put an image up, without any access control, then there is no such thing as "intended rights". Its available for anyone to use as they want, and no one to "prosecute".

Surely you can publish an image with a restrictive Creative Commons license. The fact that there is no login or "protection" doesn't mean that you can use the image however you want. If you buy a printed book, you can't legally copy huge chunks of it and do what you like.
