How many thousands of retail jobs did they cost in England? While I agree it is a sad loss, the number of jobs lost is tiny compared to the number lost due to the fact that various companies (Play included) took advantage of this tax loophole to avoid VAT and lowered their prices to below what retailers could charge.

The government has to do something. There were three main sources of jobs in this country. Manufacturing, Services (banking, consulting, IT etc) and Retail. Manufacturing has mostly been outsourced to other countries. Services are heading that way, so what's left to provide jobs? Retail. Specifically shops.

To be honest, if they couldn't run the business without the tax break, then it wasn't much of a business

I aint bothered about them closing but retail jobs have been decimated well before Jerseys tax breaks. Out of town shopping is killing the highstreet as well as online shopping with tax

Re: Play pull out of Jersey and become a marketplace only

I have spent thousand via play over the years and never had any problems.

What will they do with my details (credit card etc)?

It's sad to see this place go. I got some extremely good deals on Play.

Re: Play pull out of Jersey and become a marketplace only

IMO Play.com started going downhill after Rakuten bought them.

Also, even before this was announced, you could see from the website that it was pushing the marketplace more and more, and I don't think it's as clear on the difference compared to using Amazon / Amazon Marketplace.

Britain still produces lots of things..... it just isn't necessarily stuff you find on the high street.
Some manufacturing is indeed returning, and it could be even more in the future once the cheap labour havens cease to be as cheap as they once were. High-quality medium volume is what British companies do very well.
