Here's the background...
I have an ntlworld.com e-mail address, and my account has recently been migrated over to the new Google platform.
Prior to the Migration, I accessed my ntlworld account via a Googlemail account, so that I could keep Outlook 2007 at home, my Windows Mobile phone and web-mail in sync using IMAP. My 2 problems with this set-up was that I had to use the googlemail smtp server from my phone, which made e-mails appear as "from
xxxx@googlemail.com (on behalf of
xxxx@ntlworld.com) to recipients and there could be a delay of up to an hour between mail arriving on my ntlworld account, and google polling it. Not major problems, but not ideal.
With the migration to the Google platform, I thought I could get rid of the old googlemail account, and just use the new IMAP server on the ntlworld.com. So far so good.
However I still have a problem getting sending to work...
The Virgin Media site gives the following settings for SMTP
Sending mail (SMTP)
SMTP server name smtp.ntlworld.com
SMTP SSL Enabled
SMTP port 465
SMTP authentication Enabled (or 'Password' on Macs)
SMTP username Full e-mail address, e.g.,
richard.branson@ntlworld.com
If I have SMTP authentication turned on, I cannot send e-mail from Outlook 2007 at home. If I switch it off, it works. On my phone, again SMTP authentication does not work, and I cannot send e-mail with SMTP switched off, because I am not on the Virgin Media network.
I assume SMTP authentication is what allows me to send e-mail via ntlworld.com when I am on another network (i.e. my phone). So what's the problem here? Is the info on the Virgin Media site wrong? Is there some setting I have not done correctly? Is SMTP Authentication on it's way (but not available yet)? Anything else?
Thanks
