Authenticated SMTP on ntlworld.com?
Here's the background...
I have an ntlworld.com e-mail address, and my account has recently been migrated over to the new Google platform. Prior to the Migration, I accessed my ntlworld account via a Googlemail account, so that I could keep Outlook 2007 at home, my Windows Mobile phone and web-mail in sync using IMAP. My 2 problems with this set-up was that I had to use the googlemail smtp server from my phone, which made e-mails appear as "from xxxx@googlemail.com (on behalf of xxxx@ntlworld.com) to recipients and there could be a delay of up to an hour between mail arriving on my ntlworld account, and google polling it. Not major problems, but not ideal. With the migration to the Google platform, I thought I could get rid of the old googlemail account, and just use the new IMAP server on the ntlworld.com. So far so good. However I still have a problem getting sending to work... The Virgin Media site gives the following settings for SMTP Sending mail (SMTP) SMTP server name smtp.ntlworld.com SMTP SSL Enabled SMTP port 465 SMTP authentication Enabled (or 'Password' on Macs) SMTP username Full e-mail address, e.g., richard.branson@ntlworld.com If I have SMTP authentication turned on, I cannot send e-mail from Outlook 2007 at home. If I switch it off, it works. On my phone, again SMTP authentication does not work, and I cannot send e-mail with SMTP switched off, because I am not on the Virgin Media network. I assume SMTP authentication is what allows me to send e-mail via ntlworld.com when I am on another network (i.e. my phone). So what's the problem here? Is the info on the Virgin Media site wrong? Is there some setting I have not done correctly? Is SMTP Authentication on it's way (but not available yet)? Anything else? Thanks |

When you have SMTP on and your on network what error message do you get?
When your off network you can't use the NTL SMTP. We still want you to use SMTP Authentication though as this will need to be switched on in the future if you want to send emails on network |
Re: Authenticated SMTP on ntlworld.com?
When I test the settings I get the following message
"None of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server." Just to be clear, I have the following settings: My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked. Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected. Outgoing server port is 465 Using SSL User Name is xxxx@ntlworld.com Require Secure Password Authentication is NOT checked When you say "When your off network you can't use the NTL SMTP" does this mean I will never be able to use smtp.ntlworld.com from my phone, even with SMTP authentication? Thanks |

Re: Authenticated SMTP on ntlworld.com?
Thanks for the information.
We have identified an issue specifically with ntlworld.com email accounts using Outlook with SMTP authentication switched on. We are reviewing how we can resolve this. In the meantime continue with SMTP authentication switched off |

There is a work around if your ntlworld.com e-mail account has been migrated to the new googlemail platform.
The ntlworld.com SMTP server is only accessible when you are physically on the NTL/Virgin Media network. The virginmedia.com SMTP server, however, can be accessed outside the NTL/Virgin Media network! To enable access for an @ntlworld.com e-mail address: From the 'My Virgin Media' page go to 'Manage Household Accounts'. Add a new mailbox with the e-mail address ending @virginmedia.com. Use this account to authenticate with the virginmedia.com SMTP server, but send the e-mail from your @ntlworld.com address. So in GMail, for example, you would configure 'send mail from another address' as follows. First configure the @ntlworld.com account you are sending from (see thumbnail #1). Then configure the virginmedia.com SMTP server and authentication (see thumbnail #2). Hope that makes sense. :D James |
