Messages not being deleted from server

Recently a friend who also has a blueyonder e-mail address asked if I'd looked at my e-mail recently using web mail. He claimed that all his old e-mails were still listed (He uses Thunderbird). As I use Outlook Express all the time, I couldn't tell, but when I looked via web mail just now, every e-mail back to the beginning of January is there.
The "Leave a copy of messages on server" box in my Outlook Express accounts advanced properties tab is unchecked, so I assumed that it would be deleting the messages as they were downloaded, but apparently not.
Is this correct or am I missing a trick somewhere?

If you want POP connections to download and not leave a copy on the server I believe you now have to set that in the POP settings after loggng in to Webmail. The server doesn't work in the conventional POP way which would delete unless requested not to.

I assume this is a legacy of bolting POP functionality on to a webmail service rather than building a POP service.

I think, even with that set, it puts them in the Bin folder for 30 days before finally deleting them.

I think that's why the "Recent:" function must work.

Re: Messages not being deleted from server

Thanks for the information. I've now set the POP setings to delete messages after they are downloaded, so I will see what happens.

I have removed my ntl POP acounts from Thunderbird and added the accounts again with the new settings including recent: before the incoming address. I have set the messages to be deleted from virgin once they have been used by POP (bit annoyed they stay there for 30 days) although it could be handy if I delete one by mistake. I am hoping this will prevent the complete redownloading of messages on my lap top if I have down loaded them on the desktop.

I don't always use the laptops email that much and if it's going to down load hundrends everytime I won't think this is in anyway an improvement.

Sorry but they are still download with or with out recent, however this is all so happening with Yahoo's mail server. I can see myself using IMPA4 which I don't really want to. But it may be the way to stop this.
