Butchers Banned From Using Knives

honest to god you couldn't make it up

Quote:
Butchers at Sainsbury's stores are not allowed to use certain knives to cut meat because they have not had enough health and safety training.

The customer said: "He (the butcher) has been doing it for 30 years and we were chatting recently about how he had been teaching all the young butchers how to cut the meat and joints.

"But when I asked him to de-bone the joint he said he couldn't in case he cut himself with a knife and he would not be insured."
wasn't sure whether to put this in humour

Source?

I am laughing at this right now... I think 30 Years experience outweighs Health and Safety somehow. (In this scenario)

I think. It appears the bloke in question had not been trained to de-bone a lamb joint. Nothing about actually banning knives, but heyho, it's the daily fail.

I think everybody knew what the source would have been, without even having to ask.

Re: Butchers Banned From Using Knives

It seems to me that Sainsbury's has certain training procedures in place and their insurance company insist that these are adhered to. If this person had only been employed by them for a short time, it is entirely possible that he had not been given the opportunity to attend the relevant training session. It is also possible that he does not have any formal qualifications and has been working in the family business for those thirty years, without going to college and for some reason has ended up working for a supermarket.

But how would have proved to any prospective employer you were qualified in your chosen field? If I employ someone who says they are qualified, the first thing I ask for is to see their certificates.

As pointed out, this may be an insurance thing. I agree that it sounds silly, but I guess it's just one of those things that can't be avoided.

As most decent employees do here in Norway: Set you a task, and judge you on how you perform said task.

well usually (or should i say what has happened in the past) is a one day trial or similar to see if you know what you are talking about
nowadays i see young lads on site with the same quals as me but no experience (paid the same) and can't do the job

Re: Butchers Banned From Using Knives

Is the 'Mirror' classed as an 'approved' publication?
Link
Or will the original source of the story do?
South Wales Echo
The bit that is missing(censored?) from the Mirror article is:-
Quote:
“He has been doing it for 30 years and we were chatting recently about how he had been teaching all the young butchers how to cut the meat and joints.”

Sorry, but I treat my business and my tenants with far more regard than that, to allow a potentially unqualified electrician, for example , to effect any repairs or installations, without first ensuring they are qualified to carry out the work. I do not treat qualifications as a ticket to employment, but why would I consider employing someone with qualifications, above someone who has none (apart from the fact that for some jobs is it a legal requirement)?

Re: Butchers Banned From Using Knives

a good few supermarket " butchers " are no such thing. They are basically meat slicers and have no knowledge on how to split a carcass into primals and bone out those that needed it.
