Butchers Banned From Using Knives
 
honest to god you couldn't make it up

I think. It appears the bloke in question had not been trained to de-bone a lamb joint. Nothing about actually banning knives, but heyho, it's the daily fail.

It seems to me that Sainsbury's has certain training procedures in place and their insurance company insist that these are adhered to. If this person had only been employed by them for a short time, it is entirely possible that he had not been given the opportunity to attend the relevant training session. It is also possible that he does not have any formal qualifications and has been working in the family business for those thirty years, without going to college and for some reason has ended up working for a supermarket.

It would have been helpful, if you had provided the source in the OP.

seems to me that sainsbury's do what a lot of companies do nowadays and ignore experience in favour of bits of paper
A similar thing happened to me ,i have been doing my job for 25 yrs or so but still had get a NVQ2 to say i knew how to do it ,and believe me i could have taught the examiner a thing or two

But how would have proved to any prospective employer you were qualified in your chosen field? If I employ someone who says they are qualified, the first thing I ask for is to see their certificates.

As pointed out, this may be an insurance thing. I agree that it sounds silly, but I guess it's just one of those things that can't be avoided.

As most decent employees do here in Norway: Set you a task, and judge you on how you perform said task.

well usually (or should i say what has happened in the past) is a one day trial or similar to see if you know what you are talking about
nowadays i see young lads on site with the same quals as me but no experience (paid the same) and can't do the job :shrug:

Sorry, but I treat my business and my tenants with far more regard than that, to allow a potentially unqualified electrician, for example , to effect any repairs or installations, without first ensuring they are qualified to carry out the work. I do not treat qualifications as a ticket to employment, but why would I consider employing someone with qualifications, above someone who has none (apart from the fact that for some jobs is it a legal requirement)?

a good few supermarket " butchers " are no such thing. They are basically meat slicers and have no knowledge on how to split a carcass into primals and bone out those that needed it.
