Watching 320x180 videos on a small screen (3 inch or less) can be quite acceptable. However, if you watch them on a larger screen they will appear blocky.
If you are concerned about the size of the video, I would suggest you investigate different codecs when producing the AVIs. x264 gives just about the best compression and reproduction quality available today. It does, how ever, take a while to compress the video and can require quite a powerful PC to play back (although for movies ripped and compressed from DVD, any PC should be fine).
