TV Flickers Using Samsung Box But Not On Aerial Channels

I have just had my Pace box upgraded to the newer Samsung box so I can have the 2Mb broadband service.

Since we have have had that done the TV starts up in black and white and flickers between black & white and colour. The same thing happens when switching cable channels using the remote control.I thought this was just a minor glitch but it's still doing it now after a few weeks.

Strangely when I switch to the usual terrestrial channels provided by the aerial there isn't a problem.

I have my setup rigged so that my VCR, my NTL STB and my DVD player are all connected to the one SCART socket on the TV using a 3-in-1 SCART unit.

Another annoying thing is that unlike my Pace box I cannot access the settings and find the optimum settings for my setup.

Has anyone else had these problems?

Thanks for that,Roy.

I checked all connections and they seem OK. Wonder if the Samsung box is too fast for my old TV. The TV's probably refreshing at 50hz. Mybe that's the problem or maybe the scart sockets can't cope.

the TV and samsung should both be 50hz

its probably just a slight syncing issue with an older TV

Have you tried removing the SCART switcher and connecting the Samsung box directly to the TV?

Re: TV Flickers Using Samsung Box But Not On Aerial Channels

Does the Samsung have S-Video output?
Sounds like the kind of effect I get on my TV when my DVD is in S-Video mode and it's plugged into the scart socet that doen't do S-Video.

Check the PAL/RGB/S-Video settings on your ntl box.

Thanks for that, Jimbo. That solves the problem. The flicker has disappeared;the picture looks a lot better and the sound is stronger too. For some reason the SCART switcher won't let the video signals through.

On the old Pace box it was possible to swap between composite video and RGB, but there is no settings access on the Samsung remote. I suspect that the Samsung box is sending out RGB signals which the SCART switcher can't deal with.

Anyone found a way to access the settings at all?

My opologies if I misunderstand your request! But do you mean to change the stb output between rgb and composite? If so press the guide button on your remote control, select settings from the menu, then select tv picture signal, here you can change the output between rgb/composite.

Hope that helps, once again sorry if that's not what you meant!

No problem. When I got the Samsung box I got a new remote and it wasn't clear that you could access the settings that way. I've just tried it but the flicker still remains so it looks like the SCART switcher is the problem but I don't know why.

Cheap-o scart splitter? What equiptment have you got? Try running something (DVD player or whatever) through the VCR socket on the NTL box. Whenever the DVD is on, the NTL box will allow the signal to pass through.

£9.99 from Argos.

My setup is like this:-

Ribbon SCART cable from NTL box to VCR
Aerial to RF input on VCR
RF Cable direct from VCR RF output to TV
SCART Cable from NTL box direct to Argos Adaptor
SCART Cable from DVD player to Argos Adaptor

This setup allows me to record a cable channel while watching a terrestrial channel or vice versa.
