DNS Connection Keeps Dropping

I am having serious issues with my DNS connection on one of the machines on my network. The internet will work fine for around 5 - 10 minutes, but after this the DNS connection fails, and i can not resolve the addresses of any websites.

The computer is W2K SP4, AVG, ZA Pro, FireFox & IE, and is connected directly to the cable modem, using the etehernet cable.

I have tried to narrow down the problem, and have found the following:
[1] Its not the network adapter
[2] Its not the Ethernet connection to the modem
[3] Its not Zone Alarms
[4] There isnt much info on the net about this problem

I therefore believe it to be a software related issue, but really am unaware of what to do to trectify the issue, any ideas people?

All other machines on the network are working fine, its just this lone machine, which has decided to go on an Easter break.

Cheers, Seb

Sorry forgot to mention that I have tried both IE6 and FireFox, and neither work, once the DNS connection has dropped

Resetting the service doesn't have any effect once the connection has dropped. (Does this indicate that this may not be a DNS issue?)

If I restart the machine though the internet works agin, for approx 10 mins.

Re: DNS Connection Keeps Dropping

hi seb...

when you say the dns connection fails, do you have a valid IP address can you ping domain names or IP addresses.

may be wrong but am thinking along the lines of a winsock problem !!!!

Re: DNS Connection Keeps Dropping

Sounds like it could be an ARP issue to me.... is the IP address a fixed one or dhcp controlled?

Riteo then, the connection has failed again this evening. I have tried to ping some domains once the connection has dropped, and it says that the host is uknown. However when i enter the ip address of the domain it is able to communicate and send packets. This enlighten anyone to the problem?

Cheers

EDIT: Ipconfig says, when the connection has died, that i have an ip address (81.xxx.xxx.xxx)

OK, i've just checked my network settings, and it already had DNS servers stipulated. I have now set it to "obtain the DNS servers automatically" to see if that helps. If not what DNS servers do you suggest i try?

Re: DNS Connection Keeps Dropping

The ntl dns servers are:

194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100

there was a virus a while ago that changed the dns to something else... 69.xxx.xxx.xxx IIRC but i can't remember the name of the virus.

What DNS servers do you have appearing?

I had:

195.40.1.250
195.40.0.250

I'll let it automatically obtain them, see if this fixes them. If not i'll use the NTL ones you suggested, and see how that goes. Cheers for all the help so far, i'll keep you updated.

Re: DNS Connection Keeps Dropping

Never really got to the route of the problem... however since i re-introduced my router to my network setup it all seems to work perfectly again.
