Close down all the windows
Right click on the desktop and select properties.
Click on the settings tab and make sure it's something like 800*600 or 1024*768 and either 16 or 32 bit

sorted out the crap colour someone had changed it to 16 colours now i have proper colour back
16 colours? Wonder if you had a driver problem that reset it? Seems strange that someone would go out of their way to set it to 16 colours I've set all the PC's in the department that I work in to the max colour setting and a decent resolution as I was fed up with looking at 800x600 @ 256 colours (our I.T boys are useless at setting profiles up so they work first time)
