Would I be better off leaving things as they are? ( I use my own Linkseys wifi router and a VM modem that I've had for about five years. It can only go up to 20, but that's all that I have after the speed upgrade anyway).

My advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it.
That said, I assure you that modem mode on the SH is a robust solution for when your current cable modem breaks down.
