Well in the context of this thread ,because the film was out of copyright and officially in the public domain it would have been perfectly legal to download it* wouldn't it ?

Ok i'll put you out of your misery .No it wouldn't be legal simply (or not so simply)because it was a derivative work based on another story called The Greatest Gift which still had copyright attached to it .So if you think sorting all that out would be simple then you sir should be a copyright lawyer
