I didn't hear of him until 2008. He was already WBA World super featherweight champion at that point just about to make his move up to lightweight where he captured the WBC title. I managed to catch his fights via Youtube and other less reputable sites.
His brain surgery in 2001, prior to turning pro, really held him back. He struggled to fight in America with most of his career based in Venezeula, Mexico and Japan.
His aggressive in your face style, plus crazy punch power was a pleasure to watch. He could have been a massive name if he fought in the States more often. He's now in a short list of former world champions who's career ended without defeat.
Many say his head injuries from 2001, plus punches taken in the ring, may have caused demons which contributed to the violence towards his wife. There is also speculation cops killed him in his cell and made it look like suicide. I personally feel people are trying protect his legacy.
I don't condone what he done but becoming a 2 weight world champion by the age of 27, without really featuring in America is a massive accomplishment. 27 fights, 27 wins by K.O. is impressive.
One day someone will make a movie about this guy. His story is far too triumphant and dark for it not to be told.
Thinking back Valero was on the books of Golden Boy Promotions. Maybe Boxnation will repeat some of his fights? His first 18 ended in the first round. You could probably watch this guys whole career within 4 hours.
