On TiVo, you need another device to remind you when shows you want to watch live are on since reminder functionality is MIA on TiVo (and yet available on every other PVR out there). Sure, you can record that content, but depending on what content you're recording (X-Factor, Football games etc), you then have to impose on yourself a 'media-blackout' to avoid getting spoiled about what happened in the show you had to record (if you forgot it was on, a situation which wouldn't happen with reminders).
I doubt if Sky have reason to be worried, you can only get TiVo within 53% of the UK and even the majority of those within the cable network are still waiting for an installation date. More importantly, Sky own an increasing amount of content rights and use that to their advantage in any way possible - hence the pathetic restriction on not allowing Sky content to be viewed in the mini-TV window when using TiVo's EPG and the absence of certain Sky HD content on VM.
