Why should it be free? Virgin would go bankrupt in no time with that business model.

The current product V+HD is equal to Sky+HD. The new product provides additional services. Not everyone has a PC / PS3 / media streamer and not everyone has them in their living room.
VM aren't trying to sell it to people who don't want it or need it - it's for customers who recognise the benefits of having such a product andf are willing to pay the price.
Like most things, in time this will become the norm for VM TV customers and will be well used and well liked. Finally something that gives VM a real edge over Sky (where available).

indeed and V+HD will continue for now, so if you have it it's still supported.
