I would disagree with you, Gary - one size does not fit all; there is a difference in being taught about something, and being taught it (practical versus abstract).
For instance, children are taught Arithmetic, English, French, etc, which allows them to use practical skills in Arithmetic, English, French, etc - they are taught about Religion, Ethics, Politics et al to (imho) give them knowledge of those areas to inform viewpoints, not to give them skills to be religious practitioners or politicians. Sometimes, learning is for the sake of knowledge, not just for practical application (but willing to be corrected on this by any practicing teachers on the forum).
