Same thing could happen with Thomas Cook or First Choice, although less likely simply because they're a bigger company and bulk book, but potentially you could have a holiday booked at one hotel only to arrive and be told by the rep that the hotel has cancelled all bookings. The difference is they're more likely to have other stock in the area, and you've got a rep you're paying for to sort the issue out.
this is more or less word for word what roomsnet told me on the phone however when we spoke to the hotel agent they use when we were in spain he told us that new contracts with roomsnet where not due to be renewed for a while but they had not recieved payment for bookings for months.
