It took a fortnight to settle down here. Even now I'm not totally sorted, I'm having problems (again ) accessing my FTP server files, and this time Abyssunderground has not been able to help, I do know it can work, for 10 days after replacing my router with a newer one,I had all the speed I should, and everything connected
Hopefully this too will pass. I still have the speed correct!
However frustrating waiting is,I still think Virgin and cable a better bet than ADSL. I hear much worse horror stories from freinds stuck with phone line connections via the BT network. They envy those able to choose cable.
I've restarted my modem quite a bit, and it's still saying 10mb, same with people I know in the area. But I'm still getting very varying speeds - anything from 2mb to 6mb (usually the lower), while mostly everyone else is getting 9mb/10mb.

We've had a new modem fairly recently (18/24 months), so I wouldn't have thought it was that. My downstream receive power level is 12dBmv (good? bad? alright?).

I don't think it's the router either, as even with a computer plugged straight in to the modem, it's still 2-6mb.
