Rubbish Broadband

Hi,

For the last few months, we've geen getting some iffy connections to out broadband.

Take today for instance - and the same think reguarly happens:

Router is synced at: DSL Up : 2176 kbps / 448 kbps
Speedtest: Download: .72Mbps... (Yes you read that right...)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1400221471.png

Tomorrow when I do another speedtest it'll be back to around 1.85Mbps which is about the fastest we get.

So far I've done:

Router in test socket / and bypassed any extensions
Changed the filter - and changed all filters
Line noise test - yes there is a very tiny bit of static but I've heard worse on a DSL connection

BT Speedtest:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

Download Speed: 675 Kbps

Download speedachieved during the test was - 675 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 200-1000 Kbps.
Additional Information:

Your DSL Connection Rate :2112 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 750 Kbps

So far the ISP has blamed: the line, the filters, the router, the noise on the line.

One other thing - this never used to happen with our previous provider.

The connection is a ADSL 8Mb business connection so I think the contention is 20:1 not 50:1 like a standard consumer account.

Any advice on getting this resolved as it's really starting to get annoying.

There's your problem. You're capped to 750kbps at the exchange.

Get your ISP to ask BT Wholesale to perform a profile reset on the line

Come over to virgin media then >:3 or is it not available in your area?

I'd go with an LLU provider then, if that's available to you.

Your IP profile on wholesale gets capped to the lowest speed seen in a certain period, so I'm guessing there's occasional bursts of noise that dip your line down to ~800k. It then stays there till reset (or a really long period passes without noise) Most LLU providers don't do this, and give you whatever speed you sync with at the time so a simple reboot fixes it.

I know on Be/O2 LLU I used to get daily noise bursts that dipped my line from 16mb down to about 6mb, a reboot later and I'd be back up to 16 - while my neighbours on BT were permanently stuck on 6 :D. Be are also offering SRA in some places too IIRC.

Would love to - not available. Unless they want to cable up a small village in West Berkshire.

Intresting - thanks for that.

How do I find if an ISP connection is LLU? I know I'm on BT wholesale at the moment - intrested to find if me previous provider was or wasn't which will explain why it never happened with them.

If Sky could give me a couple of static IP's I'd seriously consider them.

Edit - sorry I'm being a muppet...

Samknows:

Our exchange services:

  • BT Wholesale ADSL
  • BT Wholesale ADSL Max
No LLU services.

Why not change providers then, if your current ISP has changed your profile?

I use Invictel - www.invictel.co.uk - never had any issues. They're a small company but means I get a more personal service ;)

Got this result from Invictel's site:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 7.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 6.5Mbps and 8Mbps.

Well, not really. I dont use the internet much during the day and Invictel is unlimited usage off-peak, so Im on their Family 30GB package. £17.99 isnt bad for what you get. I think the good tech support is worth paying the extra £1 or £2 for.

Why would I do that? The limitation is BT and their copper not the ISP.
