Replacing a laptop HDD

A friend of mine has a Compaq Presario 1201EA laptop. He's asked me to fit a new hard drive in it as his current one has died. Do I need to buy the same make, model and size drive that is currently fitted?

no nearly all laptops just take a standard 2.5inch drive take the old one with you when you buy the new one
