Help with setting up a second computer on wireless network
 

Hello, i am using a belkin wireless router/modem for my broadband (adsl) on my laptop which is running WinXP Home. Recently my grandson has moved in for a few months and wants to share my connection on his desktop, also running XP Home.
He has bought a wireless dongle (belkin), and we have tried to set it up but to no avail. We have installed the dongle software and it can see my network but nothing we do will make it connect.
Do I have to set anything up on my laptop first or what? Any and all help will be appreciated.

hmmm, so assuming the BWR&M has an IP of say 192.168.0.1
your machine has an IP 192.168.0.2
grandson's machine has an IP of 192.168.0.3

can your machine ping both 192.168.0.1 and gandad's 192.168.0.3
can grandson's machine ping 192.168.0.1 and your 192.168.0.2

can you both get into the routers internal web server page (whatever thats set to?).

can you currently browse the web, but he cant?.
what does both ipconfig /all show?.

when you say 'it can see my network'what do you mean exactly?, he can see your shared drives on your laptop, and you can see his shared drives on your laptop but he cant get to the web yet perhaps?.

Hi, thanx for the reply.
I can access the internet but he cannot. I do not kniow how to ping a machine as I am an older lady and not to computer literate.
My grandson cannot connect to my network at all even though it can be seen in the Belkin G USB Network Adaptors window.
My machine is connected wirelessly by a Belkin ADSL2 Router with Modem.
My Grandson is trying to use a Belkin G USB Network Adaptor to connect to my network.

p.s - Do I add his machine via the Setup Wireless Network Wizard on my machine?

thats OK we older gentlemen are here to help ;), age has no meaning here, so how old is the grandson, old enough to learn and follow some instructions as you both learn together?.

in this case, No, as the belkin is the main machine both yours and his connects to.

there are ways that it would but you dont need to worry about that here.

you could, or should be able to power off your machine and the lads machine should still be able to connect through to the web.

Do you know what sort of wireless security you set up when you got your wireless connection to work? If you ran a set up wizard on your PC it would have asked to put in a pass phrase or PIN code. Your grandson just needs to know what the security settings were so he can use the same settings on his wireless connection.

Looking at previous posts, you have set up WPA security. Has grandson selected the same security level and key on his machine?
