People failing driving tests repeatedly

I feel like there should be a limit of 5 attempts at either theory or practical, then you’re out. Driving obviously just isn’t for you and for your own safety and those around you, you should not be allowed to drive.

Unpopular opinion, perhaps.

128 fails!

Re: People failing driving tests repeatedly

Failing the theory test takes quite some doing.

The practical test is quite hard and for good reason, so failing that is understandable but the system is working if they retake and become good enough to pass.

They walk among us.

But as long as they keep failing the test they keep walking, and that’s fine.

Re: People failing driving tests repeatedly

If you have to take the theory test 75 times before passing, then passing is likely to have been a fluke and doesn't represent their knowledge.
There are online tools to help to practice, so to fail that many times before is horrendous.
If you fail that many times, either the pass rate has to be higher or they has to pass 3 times in succession. Passing shouldn't depend on getting the right question on a particular day.

Maybe the people they are paying to take their tests for them are not good enough?

"You must take the official theory test in English, Welsh, or British Sign Language."

So what happens if someone doesn't speak English are they not aloud to drive in the UK?

They're probably a visitor and already have a foreign driving license.

If not, what are they doing living here and not integrating ;)

I've seen several people fail their theory test.
To be fair, sometimes the way the questions are written doesnt help.

I do agree though that if after 5 attempts you have no way of passing then save your money and take the bus.

If I had to take a theory test I'd probably fail it.

Lets be honest here, how many of you out there, having driven for years, religiously read through the latest Highway Code every 6 months to familiarize yourself with all the changes?

Very true, I don't think I'd want to do it all over again.

Some of the roundabouts in this country, it's a miracle to work out where to go they can be so complicated.

From my observations 90% of drivers have no idea what the highway code is

Thinking on it, most drivers let the car do the work now.
Cars that have beeps, whistles and flashing lights if you get too near the car in front, go faster than the speed limit, wander near the center white line(s), and a camera for those difficult reversing maneuvers.

Sensors everywhere that operate the wipers at the first drop of rain, notify of a slight drop in tyre pressure, a continually updating map so you don't need to look at road signs, beeps for door open, boot open, fly open, . . . hands free phone kit so you can chat with your mate while overtaking at 95mph on the AI.

Driverless cars? . . already here Mr Musk :D

Some drivers turn off as much of that as they can :D

We do yes :D

edit:

and with perfect timing, a letter arrives to inform me the car tax is due :D

Actually it’s easier to fail than you think… especially on the hazard perception bit. It’s generally (or was) people who have already passed their car license and are going for their motorbike license see the hazard earlier and subsequently click too early and therefore fail. The advice I was given was when you see the hazard wait one second and then click.

Mind it’s been some years since I did my theory for my bike test so it’s probably all changed since then. I was also ridiculously hungover and sleep deprived after flying back from Singapore and going straight to the assessment centre

I'm glad there was never a theory test when I took mine.

Ditto, passed both my tests (car & bike) before they existed.

When I was using the official DVD to prepare for my bike theory in 2000 after 25 years of driving cars and a few months commuting on a 125, I consistently over-stated the hazards. Still passed it, though.

Re: People failing driving tests repeatedly

I passed my test the month before theory tests first came in. I like that you need to pass your theory to get to learn to drive, South Africa had that way back. I still get a new Highway Code every couple of years and have a read through but new rules are generally publicised pretty well especially with the "furore" that is always generated with changes.
I agree with the problem with experienced drivers and hazard perception. We do tend to see the problem earlier plus we sometimes see other things we regard as a potential hazard but is wrong for the test.

Re: People failing driving tests repeatedly

I failed my theory test by one mark 15+ odd years ago. Everyone I spoke to told me to retake it asap but I felt deflated and did not taking their advice. I use to drive too fast according to my driving instructor. I just wanted to get the lesson over with.

I'm still without a driving license and provisional (expired). But I have a rail card :woot:

At night when I'm out I see flashing white lights. Like the street lamps are strobing. I've had my eyes checked, they are healthy. Just as well I'm not driving to be honest. The back of my neck frequently spasms. I've had an MRI scan. Results were normal no need for further treatment. Doctors say I need to manage it.

I'd get a second opinion as soon as I could if I were you :tu:
