Can't Access Loads of Websites!
1 Attachment(s)
Is anybody else having problems with their Virgin media Internet connection at the moment? Specifically there are a number of websites that I just cannot access. The browser just hangs until it times out. One of the websites is http://liverpoolfc.tv plus many others.
I have attached a tracert screenshot of me trying to connect to liverpoolfc.tv. I would appreciate any help with this issue that you can offer.. Thanks! |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
That's odd... doesn't work for me either. Also, I add http://ign.com (was looking up a strategy guide for Shadow Of The Colossus last few creatures) and http://open.salon.com (link Roger Ebert tweeted about writing).
Typically this would happen just as I get my VMNG300 installed (30Mb on overlay) and everything is running nice. There's always SOMETHING, isn't there? Oh, as a side note, same lack of success with neighbours connection (10Mb on legacy). What's going on here? |

Ditto. VirginMedia in Gloucester, can't access any of the sites linked to in the above post. I know all th esites are working because I can access them over my mobile phone network on my phone.

Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
soo, is this a virgin problem, or a firmware update thing thats gone wrong or something ?
does virgin know about it, are they doing anything about it ? got same problems, though it mostly seems to be game/online game sites that are effected |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
Same here, can't access Intel's download centre (downloadcenter.intel.com) but can access www.intel.com.. Youtube's ok too.. Traceroute drops out at the same point as speedymove's..
EDIT: Just spoke to 50Mb support, they're not aware of anything but is going to check with the networks team.. |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
You should be thankful you can't access Redsh*teTV - no silverware games been on there for years now
|
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
It's also affecting World of Warcraft users- we can't even launch the game to log on.

How long does it take these guys to sort out network problems like this normally? |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
Speedy, depends on what the problem is.. Could be a 5 min fix, could take a few hours.. If you're just browsing the web, some people have had success using the proxy server (webcache.virginmedia.com:8080) to access the sites they're having trouble with (see this post on VM's support forum). Seems to take a different route thus avoiding the problem router.

Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
It's certainly not a DNS problem; sites resolve but won't ping or respond on port 80.
The proxy is a nice temp fix. |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
All those sites quickly accessible from Glasgow
Hope you get I sorted bud |

Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
Bumping this thread because this problem seems to have resurfaced, with the same websites affected. Steam, Blizzard/WoW, liverpoolfc.tv (lol), guild wars, etc.
edit: From Bournemouth. Problem's been reported again on the VM forums by some of the same people who were complaining about it last week, so I know it's not just me. http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...ed/td-p/495193 |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
Steam and liverpoolfc.tv working fine from Leeds on 30Mb
|
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
I can connect instantly in Liverpool as well to those sites as well.
|
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
I cannot connect either, use steam everyday it is ridiculous this problem. Does anyone know why it actually happens?
Also, I am in gloucester for anyone having the same problem in this area. |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
if you run a tracert it'll fail at one of the hops, winn-bb-1a-as0-0.network.virginmedia.net. i don't understand it really, barely computer literate, but i assume that server's having issues.

Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
Back with a vengeance now... we're talking BBC site/rss feeds not working (can ping, dns resolves, site doesn't come up), eBay not loading a bunch of images, other sites I was using like theTVDB.com failing to load at all or even ping. It's a real mess.
There's always something, eh? Just as I iron out all the bugs on the home network end, VM have a problem with their infrastructure. It's disappointing to have the feeling only half the entire internet is accessible. |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
BBC's fine, it always has been for me. Some people have had problems with facebook and IGN, and those have always been fine for me, too. I really don't get what the problem is.
|
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
Can confirm I've lost BBC pages, STEAM and loads of others :(
|
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
Appears to be alright now, although in the meantime I've rigged the router up to use Google's DNS, which seems faster than VMs, so not a fair test although I don't see that it makes much difference.

No, it makes little difference to speed unless the DNS servers are far away. It would be nice if the Superhub let me use other DNS servers simply though, then I could dodge these drop-out issues with ease when they crop up. |
Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
I agree, probably VM's DNS servers are about the same, although despite a ~10ms ping increase (~30ms vs. ~20ms) on Google's DNS, sites do seem a tad quicker to load. Main reason for the change was to see if it would avert any problems I was having, but in most cases the sites still wouldn't load all content, or anything at all.

Re: Can't Access Loads of Websites!
I'm having this problem, been like it for a few days now. I'm having to use a webcache but it's far from ideal. Anyone else experiencing it?
