assistance required please

story so far:

my wife's friend has brought her laptop to me as she is 'unable to get on the internet'
os is vista home prem 32bit sp2, device manager says no issues with the wireless adapter or the wired adapter.
when i connect to my router using wired or wireless network & sharing centre shows me connected to router and internet. i can do a tracert to bbc.co.uk using cmd window, 8 hops, via cosh-core, glfd-bb, glfd-tmr, redb-ic to 212.58.224.138. So i guess i am connected.

launch IE,FF or chrome and i get 'unable to display', AV (Zonealarm) is unable to update.

I have run malwarebytes in safemode - picked up 4 items - worm.p2p, and removed them. run ccleaner inc registry scan. disabled Zonealarm completely and windows firewall but still no joy. restore not switched on so no restore point to go back to!

Any ideas please??

Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, then LAN settings.

Make sure all boxes are unticked. If any are ticked, untick them. If there's blank or junk in any of the boxes, take a note what it is, and then delete it.

no ticks, nothing in the boxes

Can you browse in safe mode with networking? Could be security program blocking access via browser(s)

Re: assistance required please

Hmm, see if you can get Telnet to install (http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1793/...telnet_client/) on Vista (annoying it isn't installed by default like on XP), and then open a CMD window and type:

telnet www.google.com 80 and press enter

The command prompt should go blank, if it does type any random junk and press enter twice. Do you get any messages, errors or otherwise? If so, what?

Re: assistance required please

I'd suggest you uninstall zonealarm completely as it can't be fully disabled any other way and may be part of the problem.

qasdfdsaq 20-02-2011 00:02

Re: assistance required please

This is true. I'd have wanted to be sure of the symptoms before removing the firewall, but it's a simpler thing to try I suppose. Definitely sounds like a firewall related problem though.

You might also want to run the ZA cleanup utility:

http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe

Re: assistance required please

taking forever to install telnet client!! 14 mins so far!!!! will clean up then uninstall if this doesn't work as it is not my pc.

qasdfdsaq 20-02-2011 00:21

Re: assistance required please

Actually I'd follow DaiNasty's advice and try uninstall and clean-up now. Even if Telnet works, it'll only tell us we have a problem and where, but won't fix it. Removing ZA would be your best bet at actually fixing it.

ok after typing that into cmd i got could not open connection to host on port 80: connect failed

---------- Post added at 01:15 ---------- Previous post was at 00:27 ----------

uninstalled ZA and ran the clean up, but still no joy with browsing! tried safe mode with networking still no joy :( i will let you wonderful people sleep om it and hope you can crack it. thx for your help so far.

qasdfdsaq 20-02-2011 01:18

Re: assistance required please

Well I'm not going to sleep too soon, so I'll keep helping :)

Has the machine had any other antivirus or security software on it in the past? Norton in particular is a common culprit. If so, you may want to run the cleanup tool for that.

In either case, the next thing to try would be a winsock reset:

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
  3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
  4. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
  5. Restart the computer.

If that fails, try resetting the entirity of TCP/IP:

Re: assistance required please

morning, tried both those, no joy. looks like a new install on the cards. just found a toshiba utility and got a log file off it, it may help someone that knows about these things. i know it is not connected by wireless at the moment, but it is wired.

Re: assistance required please

At a quick glance the wired connection appears to be working as it should. It has a valid IP and a correct gateway address so really should be working.

Clutching at straws really but 2 things I'd try:

1: Disable wireless so the system only has the wired connection available.

(reboot)

2: Try starting a browser in safe mode. (Not system safe mode but the browser safe mode where no add-ons are running)

See if that allows a 'net connection.

nope!!:( looks like a re-install is my only hope (after obi-wan of course!)

Re: assistance required please

Just check the properties on each adapter and see if something has installed itself in there. I had a bad uninstall of Comodo Firewall and it left the 'Comodo Internet Security Firewall Driver' still active and wouldn't let me ping out or browse until I looked in the adapter properties for my LAN connection and uninstalled it.

just uninstalled both adapters and reinstalled upto date drivers - grrrr what can it be???

Re: assistance required please

Import IE's Proxy Settings:

netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie

That could clear any bad proxy settings, should be Direct access if you know you are not going through a proxy server, XP was easier as you only typed 'proxycfg -u'.

Looks like a data backup from the laptop and a reinstall really!

Bah, I can't think of much else, except maybe virus or some other security software gone bad.

Does anything other than web browsing work (e.g. messenger, email, skype, etc.)? What happens if you try to telnet webcache.virginmedia.com 8080

Re: assistance required please

Have you looked at the hosts file? - I saw an infected PC where after malwarebytes had removed various infections, the hosts file was still full of junk which prevented browsers from working. Of course, a reformat and re-install will clear it as well - and maybe a good thing anway.

Re: assistance required please

The problem could be it's 'Vista'

Did you uninstall ZoneAlarm? Check in taskmanager 'vsmon.exe' is not running, if so kill it and delete it from 'C:\Windows\System32\Zonelab', I think it lives there or search for it!!

Try resetting all the browsers to their default settings, may be a security setting?

Check there are not 2 firewalls/antivirus running? I've had laptops that have AVG/Avast/MSSE all running together!!!

Did it have McAfee on? Most laptops I see have it pre-installed, if so go to McAfee and download their removal tool and run it:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/...tches/MCPR.exe

Can you log onto another account on the laptop and see if that works, or create a new admin user and log on as that and see if it works! If so their profile is knackered! You could then try the 'Windows Easy Transfer' wizard to backup the account data and copy it to the new account and see if that works also.

Having to do 2 x 12hrs is not ideal when dealing with problems, I've a mate who does 4 x 12hrs and 4 off regular.

Only recourse if all else fails is backup/re-install!

Re: assistance required please

that sony mobile phone someone has tried to connect usb-to-ethernet listed multiple times in the log is my guess as to the cause,

as for the solution, the route tables are a mess, correct those first off and then if that dosent get you anywhere try a livecd (something like slitaz cooking is ideal, small and fast) and see what that connects like, wildly guessing software faults isnt best way diagnose the problem as the route tables control all apps, id say the sony phones been plugged in and out a few times as lan connection had a number of 22 :P

good luck
