Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Hi all, first post and pretty limp wristed at most things computer, so be gentle with me!
My Sony Vaio VGN-NR38S (running Vista) will not get Internet Explorer to go on the internet.... The network has been set-up and under Network and Sharing Center it shows the computer connected to the 'Unidentified Network' but has a red cross through the onward connection to the internet. I am not sure what to do to rectify this. Anyone offer any advice please? Many thanks PP ps. My company laptop and mobile phone connect fine through the wireless router..... |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
It may be worth reading this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-gb I think you could safely download and run the fixit tool without any adverse effects. Of course you'll have to download the tool on a different machine and transfer it across. The alternative is manually entering the registry changes if you feel comfortable with this. It just changes a 'flag' in the network settings so it's unlikely to do any harm. Oh yes, welcome to Cable Forum. :) |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Thanks David
Did as you suggested, but nothing seems to have changed.........still can't get onto t'internet. Any other ideas? Cheers again PP |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Have you tried rebooting the modem and/or wireless router?
|
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Yep.
PP |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
In Network and Sharing Center, click change adaptor settings on the left, right click the wireless connection and choose disable, then right click it again and choose enable to see if there is any change
|
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Sorry, lost me there.... I don't have a 'change adaptor settings' on the left, only Tasks
View Computers and devices Connect to a network Manage wireless networks Set up a connection or network Manage network connections Diagnose and repair Manage wireless networks has an 'Adapter properties' tab though... PP |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Sorry it's me using Windows 7, I think it's that one you posted above, Manage network connections in Vista :)

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
No one has asked the obvious yet I see.;)
Who do you get your broadband from.? What make is the modem and router.? Are you trying to connect via an ethernet cable or wirelessly.? |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Ok, Manage Wireless Networks, Adapter Properties tab, just opens up a window with Networking and Sharing tabs, the Networking tab has a 'Connect using:' with the wireless wifi link and a configure button below, then a list of items that the connection uses;
Client for Microsoft Networks QoS Packet Scheduler File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder with Install, Uninstall and Properties buttons below. No Change Adaptor Settings option.... PP p.s. incidentaly, when I click on the configure botton for the wireless connection it says under 'General' tab that the device is working properly...... ---------- Post added at 19:49 ---------- Previous post was at 19:44 ---------- Masque Sky broadband. This computer, my work laptop and phone are all working just fine, this on through the cable, the others wirelessly. It is a Sky supplied router, which I think is Netgear? I am trying to get the laptop to connect wirelessly. It used to work fine, then it went back for a new hard drive under warranty, so they reloaded the OS etc and I have had to do the rest....this is where I am now. Cheers for all the help so far. PP |

As above - are you wired or wireless. If wireless - plug in a cable to see if that works first. |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Just tried the cable.....no luck, gets no further than wirelessly.

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
This is a strange one, could be a driver issue but then it wouldn't be finding 'unidentified network' hmmm
|
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Could you post the results of an 'ipconfig'. Specifically the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway for your wireless adaptor.
|
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Can the laptop see the network or even the neighbours networks.
|
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Looks like this has been going on long enough.
you need to open an administrative command prompt, to do this Start, All Programs, Accessories RIGHT CLICK on Command Prompt and then LEFT CLICK on 'Run as Administrator' type in the commands below EXACTLY netsh int reset all netsh winsock reset The first command won't tell you anything has been done, the second will tell you that you need to reboot. Do so, then tell me if you can connect properly. |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
I would try deleting any drivers for network connections, wired and wireless, then reboot the computer and reload. Every probablility that with the reinstall on a new Hard Disk the drivers are missing or corrupted.
Right click on Compuer / My Computer in the start menu and select properties. From there open the device manager. You should then be able to expand any network adapter and uninstall them. When you reboot the computer it should find new hardware and prompt you for the drivers. |

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Have you tried using system restore to take it back to a date when it all seemed to work fine? Worth a try.

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
ok, I need the IPV4 and Default Gateway addresses from one of the working machines, also try
ipconfig /flushdns on the laptop having problems. we are going to try a manual IP assignment for the machine, the problem seems to be it is not receiving a DHCP assignment from the router, let's see if it works when we manually define it's addresses. If it takes me a couple of minutes to reply it's because I am working on an iphone 3g currently, taking it up to 4.0.1, then the usual modifications and getting it working with giffgaff. |

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
1 Attachment(s)
got this from sony pdf
User manual SONY VAIO VGN-NR38S/S What should I do if my computer cannot connect to a wireless LAN access point? ❑ Connection availability is affected by distance and obstructions. You may need to move your computer away from obstructions or closer to any access point you may be using. ❑ Make sure the WIRELESS or WIRELESS LAN switch is on and the Wireless LAN indicator is lit on your computer. ❑ Make sure power to the access point is on. ❑ Follow these steps to check the settings: 1 Click Start and Control Panel. 2 Click View network status and tasks under Network and Internet. 3 Click Connect to a network to confirm that your access point is selected. ❑ Make sure the encryption key is correct. ❑ Make sure Maximum Performance is selected for Wireless Adapter Settings in the Power Options window. Selecting any other option may result in a communication failure. To change the settings, follow these steps: 1 Right-click the power status icon on the taskbar and select Power Options. 2 Click Change plan settings under the current power plan. 3 Click Change advanced power settings. The Power Options window appears. 4 Select the Advanced settings tab. 5 Double-click Wireless Adapter Settings and Power Saving Mode. 6 Select Maximum Performance from the drop-down list both for On battery and Plugged in. |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Exactly what I needed, ok, we are going to give the network adapter on the machine a manually assigned IP
Go to network and sharing center, click on 'manage wireless networks', then click your wireless connection and click on 'adapter properties'. When it is showing the various protocols, doubleclick 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPV4)' Click 'use the following IP address' 192.168.0.168 Subnet mask should automatically fill in as 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway is 192.168.0.1 Leave the DNS server entry alone for the moment. See if that gets the wireless connection online. |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Ok,
done that and now I have a pop-up window saying that 'Windows has detected an IP address conflict', and still can't get on t'internet.... PP ---------- Post added at 00:59 ---------- Previous post was at 00:47 ---------- Thanks Vanman, but I think that is if the laptop is not connecting to the router.....which mine is! It just won't go onto the internet from there..... Cheers PP |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
try 192.168.0.250 as an IP then
|
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Tried to no avail. When I look at the network it says 'Local Only' under access. does this have a bearing on it (i.e. does local only mean 'not internet')?

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
In the command prompt try
ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
in the same section we were looking at before, set the DNS servers to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 - see if that helps

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
OK - I bet it's this rearing it's ugly head again:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 Don't use the FixIt - do it manually and make sure you do it for the correct adapter! |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Quote:
LSainsbury, I tried that before coming here, used the Fix It to no avail. To do it manually I get stuck when I get to 'Interfaces' as there are two and I don't know how to find out which one it is I need....... PP |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Quote:
The interface you need to change is the one with the 169 IP address - or just add the Dword to all adapters - it won't hurt to do all of them (wi-fi and wired adapter that is). |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Working back.
The router is most likely OK, as other devices can connect. It's highly unlikely that both the wired and wireless adaptors on your pc have gone bad at the same time yet neither will connect. It's got to be software related. Have you tried disabling the firewall? |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
Dai
You are a star! I turned off Windows Firewall and nothing happened, still couldn't connect. I then found the McAfee Firewall and turned that off.....and.....BINGO!!!! I quickly turned Windows Firewall back on and I still have internet! So it would appear that the (supplied) McAfee Firewall being on was the issue all along. I would like to thank everyone for all their help, especially those who ploughed on with reply after reply attempting to help. Thank you all very much. PP:drunk: ---------- Post added at 11:49 ---------- Previous post was at 11:43 ---------- So, now that things are working, do I need ONLY Windows Firewall when surfing? Just looking in McAfee at the firewall, it appears that on the slider bar for the Security Level that 'Lockdown' was set (the top level that blocks all in and outbound), which I guess was the problem all along? Should I run McAfee Firewall alongside Windows Firewall with a lower setting? Will this keep me more secure from attacks....but actually allow me to keep surfing? Cheers again. PP |
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
McAfee firewall is better than the windows one, and you should never run two firewalls, or antivirals at the same time, so yeah enable the McAfee one again, I have mine set to Stealth with no issues.
|
Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!
I'll go with Wayfair on this one. Definitely want only one firewall running. I'm glad to hear you got it sorted in the end.
