Virgin cable Netgear Router problems
Hi,
Virgin have replaced my Virgin DSL with Virgin cable and have put in place a Netgear router. The guy told me it was simple to set up but I can't do it and Virgin are next to useless whilst charging a fortune on 0845 numbers. The problem is I can't make my laptop 'see' the Netgear wireless signal (if it exists, the light is on the router). The internet works fine with the ethernet cable plugged into it but does not go wireless (as they said it would) when pulled out. Is it because I am using a belkin wireless 8073 card and now need a netgear card? Any help would be appreciated as I am going nuts. Thanks Matt |
Re: Virgin cable Netgear Router problems
Options (1) - call Virgin and get them to sort it. Not a hard question, its their dayjob. Keep trying until you get someone that can handle the job their paid to do.
(2) Tell the forum exactly what you have done and what problems you have come across. We don't have a crystal ball. |

If it was a Virginmedia supplied router it would not be in the Networking thread but in a Virginmedia thread also. |

Option 3: Look up your router and how to set it up on the internet and come back to the forum when you have a specific question. |

Re: Virgin cable Netgear Router problems
It is a netgear VMDG280 router and it was supplied by Virgin. Virgin just gave up trying to help and 'fobbed' it off as a Belkin wireless card issue which is rubbish as other people use the virgin media hub router with other cards as I have subsequently found out. I don't want to spend another hour on the phone to them at £2 per minute

You can do the same in the config pages by going to advanced wireless and switching the radio on and off in there. |
Re: Virgin cable Netgear Router problems
Where is the wireless button exactly? there is a wifi button on the front of the router, I have switched that off and on numerous times thinking it's that and the computer still can't see the network.
What/where are the config pages, do you mean the application for my wireless card on my laptop? I can't see the options for what you mention? |

The configs are available through the IP address on the bas which is 192.168.0.1 username admin and password is changeme and then you go to advanced and check if radio is on. |

Re: Virgin cable Netgear Router problems
But the Virgin woman concluded it was a Belkin issue not a Virgin problem and said Virgin could not help, not very helpful considering I had a decent working DSL network before they came and put in their media hub

Re: Virgin cable Netgear Router problems
Virgin have concluded it's a knackered new batch of new routers and will send out a new one. Well, gee thanks Virgin for taking up 2 days of my time, I hope you will reverse all those 0845 charges that will appear on my bill

Re: Virgin cable Netgear Router problems
Hi folks
my first post on this Forum On tuesday I decided to upgrade to 20Mb from 10Mb on Virgin Broadband, the guy said we will send you a free Hub, the Netgear VMDG280. He said you will only need to change it from the existing modem. Little did I know what problems I would have. I followed instructions and had the new hub activated. Result no broadband connection. Following over two hours on the phone, it was concluded, by the Virgin representative, that the hub was working Ok and it was a problem with my computer settings. Please note I have not attempted to use the wireless part of the hub, the not connection was using a cable directly from the new hub to my desktop. As a last resort I rang Virgin Customer Services and complained re the conclusion reached that it was my problem and they are looking into it and hoped to have a solution in 2 to 7 days. To get my broadband back I have reconnected the old modem and checking my download speed through this it looks as if I have the new higher speed. However, I need the new hub to work as my existing wireless router a Netgear WGT 624 seems to reduce my broadband speed from around 19Mb to 11Mb (when my desk top is connected, cabled, through the 624, with a laptop connected through the 624 the speed is reduced still further to around 3.5Mb. (When I had 10Mb broadband I got around 8.8Mb speed so the router did not reduce speed at this level, it just seems to be affected with the higher speed) Can anyone shed any light on why I should lose so much speed when using the Netgear 624 router in this way. Thanks for looking |
