Problems with Dynamode router
Hi there
I am having trouble connecting to the internet through my Dynamode BR-6004 W-G1 802.11g router. I have had this router a while now, and it has worked fine for months until 2 weeks ago. I suspect it is a problem with the ip address, but have not got a clue what i am doing to try and sort it, so any help would be much appreciated. As i said, it was working fine. then a couple of weeks ago i noticed i was getting very slow loading of pages on the internet, eventually i called virgin media (my ISP). they assured me that their tests where showing that my connection speed was fine. they suggested unplugging the router from the modem, and connecting the main computer directly to the modem. this i did and pages where loading fine this way. They then said i should reconnect the router as it was, and reboot both the modem and the router. they then talked me through how to check my ip address, and told me that the ip address i had was wrong. they got me to change the ip address to 1 they dictated over the phone to me. then i rebooted both the modem and the router. When i tried to get online i now had no connection at all. So i reconnected the modem directly to the main pc (skipping the router) and the internet was back and running fine. Virgin media told me the connection was fine and the problem was with the router. i suspect (but my knowledge is limited) that the ip address they changed was the routers ip address, because before i changed that address i was getting connectivity albeit slow, and since changing it i cannot get any connectivity through the router on any pc or laptop or the Xbox 360, but all of them connect fine if connected directly to the modem. any ideas anyone please? Cheers Mick |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
No idea what they will have changed. Might be easiest to do a reset on the router to restore it's basic settings and start again from there.

Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Hi Rob
if you mean press the reset button on the back of the router and reboot, then i think i have tried that. otherwise, could you please explain how to reset it and "start again from there". Cheers Mick |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Hi Mick, welcome to the forums.
Could you please perform the following and post the results. With your pc running and connected to the non-working 'pc-router-cablemodem' setup: Start/Control panel/Network connections locate your network card on that page and right-click that item. Select 'status'. Now click the 'support' tab and list the 4 lines of values you see on that page. ie: mine says Manually configured 192.168.0.80 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1 |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
hi David
the only option in network connections to select is (Local area connection, connected, D-link DFE- 530tx pci fast ethernet) i right clicked that and the status is... Assigned by DHCP 192.168.1.103 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 ---------- Post added at 13:08 ---------- Previous post was at 12:58 ---------- p.s. i just checked the same thing in network connections whilst connected only to the modem without the router the status this way is.... Assigned by DHCP 86.20.150.36 255.255.255.0 86.20.148.1 cheers Mick |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Well, that all looks very healthy. The pc is 'talking' to the router and has been issued an IP address by the DHCP server in the router.
Gateway appears to be ok as well so it's a bit of a puzzle why you can't connect. Can you ping the gateway? Start/run/cmd ping 192.168.1.1 do you get a result from that? |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
ping results...
request times out (4 times) then.. ping stats for 192.168.1.1: packets sent = 4, recieved = 0, lost = 4 (100% loss) |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Are you running any sort of firewall or security suite that may include a firewall?

Re: Problems with Dynamode router
David,
the above results are without the router in the loop, durr dozy me.... here are the ping results with the router connected.... reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms ttl=128 reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms ttl=128 reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms ttl=128 reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms ttl=128 pinging stats for 192.168.1.1: packets sent=4, recieved=4, lost=0 (0%loss) approx round trip times in milliseconds; minimum = 0ms, maximum = 0ms, average = 0ms: ---------- Post added at 14:55 ---------- Previous post was at 14:53 ---------- yes running norton 360, that has a firewall, but would'nt that effect me getting on the internet even with just the modem? |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
I think you will need to add your 'local' 192.168.*.* group to the Trusted settings.
This is what I found: "1. At the Main Window, I selected "Manage Firewall" from the menu that pops up while mousing over the "PC Security" section. 2. On new window that opens "Firewall Protection Settings" select the "Network Locations" tab. 3. You find 3 tabs under "Network Locations": "Active", "Trusted", and "Restricted" 4. Starting with the "Active" tab, ensure your internet gateway (this is a router in my network) is listed here. My router was identified by the MAC Address, and was listed as "Protected" in the "Security" column. As best as I can tell, protected status only shows that Norton is monitoring and firewalling your pc FROM the network. 5. So, assuming that your network is secure, you know and TRUST the systems connected to the network, and you simply want to share files and network devices, select "Trust" from the bottom toolbar. This gives a blanket trust level to every device on this network! If you are unsure of whether you want to do this, review the Un-Trusted Networks section below. 6. A "Properties" window will open, asking for a description and selection of a trust level. Most people will be ok with selecting the first trust level "Allow file sharing on this network" Now your gateway device displays as a "Shared" network location in the list under the "Active" and "Trusted" tabs. 7. You MUST repeat the above steps on any other PC"s running Norton 360, in order to establish the trust level for the network on each PC. 8. Your network should be up and running now!" See if that matches up with the options on your copy of Norton. |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Hi David,
i have just done all that with norton firewall, all exactly as you described it. but still cant get onto the internet if i try through the router, but can if i connect directly pc to modem. Mick |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
I'm afraid I'm not terribly familiar with Norton as I have this allergic reaction to their software..
I know a couple of the folks on here are more experienced than I. Hopefully one of them can point you to any settings I've missed. I'm almost certain it's a firewall issue. Perhaps you could try disabling it for a while? You should be safe behind the router for testing purposes. |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
ok, tried turning off the firewall... no differance

Re: Problems with Dynamode router
see if you can 'talk' to your router.
probably http://192.168.1.1 with luck that will get you a control panel. If it does have a search about and see if you can locate the place to set DNS values. If they are blank set them to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (Level3 DNS servers - normally very reliable) |

This page should give you some insight into the process: http://portforward.com/english/route...04/default.htm As you will see, when you connect to the router it shows you a control panel where you can adjust various internal settings. |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Hi David,
My router must be the shy retiring type, because i cannot talk to it. i tried with and without the router connected. i just get the page cannot be found page. Mick |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
You begin to understand why I won't have Norton/Symantec products on any of my machines...
Disable Firewall. click this: http://192.168.1.1 |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
ahhhh bingo..
ok so am now talking to the router, what do i say to it? or what am i looking for here? cheers Mick |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Hi Mick. Looks like we're making some headway if you can get to the router control panel.
I'd be interested to know if you can get to the panel with the Norton firewall ON. I'm still inclined to think it's a firewall issue so confirmation on that would be useful. If you can get to the control panel with the firewall both on and off then I guess the next move would be to run the setup wizard in the router to make sure all the necessary settings such as DNS addresses are in place. |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Hi David
i can get that control panel up with the firewall on and off. the info is as follows wan status Connection Type DHCP Physical Address 08-10-73-0a-71-bb DHCP Lease timer 0 Sec Lease timer 0 WAN IP Address 0.0.0.0 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 0.0.0.0 Primary DNS IP 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS IP 0.0.0.0 lan status Physical Address 08-10-73-0a-71-ba LAN IP Address 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server ON wireless status Wireless Enabled Connection Disconnected MAC 08-10-73-0a-71-ba Radio Band 802.11b/g SSID default Channel 6 Mode AP Security None system info Edition Info APR-M14H-V1.1.14EN, 2006.07.03.16:30. Re: Problems with Dynamode router
WAN IP Address 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 0.0.0.0 Primary DNS IP 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS IP 0.0.0.0 It appears that the router is not getting an IP address from the cable modem. I'd say it's established that the link between your pc and router is working ok so the next thing I would suggest is a stepped power-cycle of the kit to see if you can get an IP for the router. The usual routine. Power off everything. Then cable modem on first and wait for the lights to settle. Next the router ditto. Finally the pc. Check this control panel again and see if the router has any IP in the WAN data. |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
David.......
you are a star, followed your advise and i am now online through the router, logged onto the router and there are ip addresses everywhere. so it all looks fixed, just gotta wait till my son comes home from V tomorrow with his laptop to make sure he can get on with that, but i cant see any reason why not. cheers mate i owe u a bevvy Mick ---------- Post added at 01:29 ---------- Previous post was at 01:26 ---------- i had tried what i thought was a step power down, but i had always left the pc on just did it with the modem and the router, but left the pc on.. until this time |
Re: Problems with Dynamode router
Excellent news Mick and glad that I could help.
It's frustrating in a way to take a couple of days to sort out a problem like this. In a hands-on situation you could probably track through and fix it in 10 minutes. Still, the important thing is that we got a result. :) |
