I cannot connect to my work server from my wireless connection

I just recently set up a wireless network at my work place, However with the new computers i have set up I'm not able to connect to my server at work by start > run > \\server name, or through a remote desktop connection. I'm using a Netgear wireless N rangemax router with the netgear 108mps wirless card, I'm able to connect those PC's to the internet but not to my server? Please Help!

Thanks,
MarkemX:confused:

Is the server in the right IP range? It is quite normal for a server to have a static IP set, if it is not in the same subnet then there will be no access!

Oh and :welcome: !

I have the router set as a DHCP.

Can you browse the web from the server?

Thats fine, so you can ping it, what error do you get when you try \\SERVERNAME then ?

"ping request canot find host \\servername please check the name and try again".

may sound silly but check all PCs are using the same name, not sure if it is case sensitive

No thats not what I meant, when you put \\SERVERNAME in run or the explorer address bar, what exactly comes up/happens?

Re: I cannot connect to my work server from my wireless connection

I understood, it will say "cannot connect" to server

Are any of the Clients/Servers running Firewalls?

markemX 25-06-2008 22:48

Re: I cannot connect to my work server from my wireless connection

No, all firewalls were disabled.

it kind of weird I have a computer that is wireless at my work that can access the server and i have tried to configure the others the same way but still no luck.

Any DNS involved? Can you connect via IP address (\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)? I suspect it is something to do with name resolution. Presumably, the clients are on a different sub-net to the server, with the router ....routing.

No DNS involved since its DHCP.

Re: I cannot connect to my work server from my wireless connection

Maybe I've misunderstood. Are the PCs AND the server connected to the LAN side of the router (wired or wireless), with the WAN side connected to the internet? Is the router acting as DHCP server for the PCs AND the server? In our setup, we have PCs connected wirelessly to a router, with the router WAN port connected to the office wired network (including the server), and the wired network connected to the Internet via a separate router.

Not the same thing. DHCP allocates addresses, DNS converts names to addresses.

Re: I cannot connect to my work server from my wireless connection

Is there an "AP isolation" feature on the Router and if i so is it enabled.

I know some routers can isolate the wireless from the wired lan to improve secuirty the feature is usally labled as "Ap isolation" "Wireless client isolation" or by placing them on a Seapearte (Virtual lan) Vlan (e.g Vlan0 wired Vlan1 wireless)

Might be worth checking the secuirty settings for the router to see if any such setting exists and disable it if needed.
