wireless router - not working with virgin

Hi,

so we bought a wireless router, as students we just got a cheap cable modem but theoretically it should work, http://www.tp-link.com/products/product_des.asp?id=3

we then got the modem today, the flat black ntl virgin on es, and set it up and it's working with an ethernet port direct into the computer. but when i plug the ethernet into the wan port on the router, it doesn't work, i can connect to the router but can't gert online, tried wireless and with a wire. i remember when i had ntl at home i had to do something with the dns settings - but no idea what (that was a belkin router). can anyone help? i've tried repowering etc and it isn't that - so was wondering if any of you guys could help?

thanks

Rob

p.s. i've tried looking for similar posts - but can't see any - if it's already been posted i apologise!

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

Did you switch the modem off & back on when you plugged the router in?

You need to do this so the modem picks up the router rather than your PC

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

yes it works direct with the modem.

i tried turning it off then back on - modem and router - to no avail.

and i got it from microdirect.co.uk

finally - someone mentioned something about dynamic and static ips?

mean anything to anyone? - if so please help.

thanks

sorry - i meant a cheap router - im not so technically advanced!!

it's this modem, it's the router that won't work.

http://www.ambitbroadband.co.uk/Data...le%20Modem.pdf - modem we got.

http://www.tp-link.com/english/soft/2007731040544.pdf - router with instruction manual.

thanks for your help guys - i appreciate it!

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

have you turned them on in the order listed?

---------- Post added at 21:53 ---------- Previous post was at 21:51 ----------

have you got the modem plugged into the WAN port

are you using a wired connection to the pc?

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

tried with and without wire - neither work. unfortunately as it's a student house the modem is in someone elses room behind a locked door -so i have to wait for them to return! but i'll try repowering in the order listen. and yes the modem is plugged into the wan port.

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

when you get access to it, try getting a wired cnnection to work first, its simpler

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

i tried wired - also didn't work. if i get a wired and wireless isn't working - is that also repairable?

tried turning it off in that order, and cloning router - still no success. any ideas?

Can you connect from the pc to the router control panel?

Open browser, enter address

http://192.168.1.1

Please report back if that works.

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

Every time you swap the device directly connected tot he modem, the modem will need to be rebooted, along with the device that's connected - both must be turned off, modem powered on first (allow to settle) then the connected device. By connected device I mean computer, router or whatever.

Only one device can be directly connected to the modem at a time, thus if you have used USB, that needs to be unplugged, and there can only be one ethernet cable out of the modem which can only connect into a Router WAN port, or a single PC. Don't try and use a switch or anything else between a modem and the PC.

If when you've plugged in the router, and rebooted, nothing will connect to the modem, try swapping out the ethernet lead you are using. It just might be that that is faulty.

When you are not using the router, i.e. posting this, presumably you are using ethernet via the modem? If so it confirms nothing is wrong with the modem, but would start to point at the router being faulty.

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

thanks for the help, i've been using an ethernet lead - that worked from modem to comp so i can't see it being faulty (though i'll use another), but i'll try it all again, restarting the lot and checking if the modem works as well. When i turn on the modem, do i have it connected to the turned off router, or turn on modem then router then connect them?

thanks for your help guys, i really appreciate it!

Re: wireless router - not working with virgin

Power everything off, change over your connections to the setup you will want so that it is all plugged in, then power up modem (allow to settle), power router (allow to settle) then computer (s).

When you have the router connected to the modem, are the lights on both the modem and router indicating there is a connection?

All Virgin Media home connnections are using dynamic IP addresses. Thus the router should be set to automatically obtain IP addresses from the modem, and equally your PC should be set to automatically obtain IP addresses. Nothing should be static.

Glad it's going, even if you had to be a bit unorthadox. I suppose that's the lesson: IT has a mind of it's own sometimes :p:

glad you get it functioning at last, was going to reply last night but didnt find the time.

iv seen this happen several times and the main thing is that people forget that in effect the (wireless)router directly connected to the CM then becomes the master routeing PC, and so you need to treat it that way, as in, get into its internal web interface from any pc on the lan and run your connection ping etc, tests directly from that router to see if its currect settings from the CM are infact valid and getting out.

another thing i find almost always works with these problems you have had is, rather than clone the mac address of your PC NC into the router, do it the other way around, that is, take the MAC on the (wireless)router, and put that MAC into the
CM<===>widowsPC-NC1 card, without the router in place.

that way you are confirming that the direct CM to PC is infact working as it should , THEN , you would reset the MAC of the internal PC NC, put the (wireless)router back into the chain and the VM system should then already know the new (wireless)router MAC as it thinks it was just working fine with that MAC earlyer.

CM<===>(wireless)router<===>pc's pluged into the routers rj45 or wireless connected.

then go back into the routers internal web server pages and run your ping tests directly there.

and in the case of VM that you do infact now have a valid WAN IP (it should as its just gave out that IP to the faked direct MAC) and the DNS servers are auto set right, 194.168.4.100, 194.168.8.100

as long as you can access the (Wireless)routers LAN side IP from the (wireless)LAN then you should have a page there with at least a ping capability.

and you should also be able to get to the CM with the internal LAN http://192.168.100.1
if you can get through to the NTL250/VM badged CM pages there is also an option to reset it remotely LAN side, so again no real need to wait for your room mate to return to get access to the room and recycle the power.

rinse,repeate.....
