Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
I am bloody tired of virgin. Even NTL was much better.
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2007/06/59.png This is what I have for 2 weeks in a row between 18.00 and 22.00 So frastrating. It feels like there are only morons working now. They advertise 20Mb while they cannot supply even 4Mb at a decent level. |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
i get them speeds most of the time and i'm on 10 meg
the service really has gone down hill, before anyone says i phoned up to cancel they talked me into staying on a cheaper charge and said they would send a tech out, the tech changed the modem and its still the same , he said its just busy near where i live?? upto 10 meg means 2 meg where i live lol |

1st 512K took 7953 ms = 64.4 KB/sec, approx 531 Kbps, 0.52 Mbps 2nd 512K took 8609 ms = 59.5 KB/sec, approx 490 Kbps, 0.48 Mbps 3rd 512K took 8782 ms = 58.3 KB/sec, approx 480 Kbps, 0.47 Mbps 4th 512K took 7781 ms = 65.8 KB/sec, approx 542 Kbps, 0.53 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 511 Kbps, 0.5 Mbps ---------- Post added at 20:39 ---------- Previous post was at 20:37 ---------- I don't understand why do I pay 25 quid every month for 4M down and 400 kbps up if I never ever have those speeds? In the morning I usually have 2.5M down and 350 kbps up. The same at night. I never goes over 2.6-2.7 and in the evening it is just a CRAWL. and I call support, what do they do? they start to go through 1st line support stupid questions and testing my modem. ---------- Post added at 20:43 ---------- Previous post was at 20:39 ---------- Quote:
Like right now I have 1/8 of the promised speed, why don't they charge me only 3 quid a month then? Why 25???? With NTL I had at least steady 2.5 down. It also never went boynd 2.5 but at least I always had a steady connection. At work I have ZEN provider and even at day time, the busiest time, I have a steady good connection. ---------- Post added at 20:45 ---------- Previous post was at 20:43 ---------- I have been ntl customer for 5 years but now I am seriously tempted to switch ISP providers and I am telling all my friends to stay as far away from virgin as they can. Fortunately or Unfortunatelly I am IT tech guy and they listen to my advices. Frankly speaking it is not going for 2 weeks, it is going for much longer. It started some time in April... |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
Could be worse... you could be paying £38 p/month like me :erm:

Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
You really all need to stop trusting these speedtest sites as gospel. I just used the Maidenhead one as per the above results and got around 2Mb on my 4Mb connection but broadbandmax showed the connection as 3.7Mb immediately after.
There are many factors which affect the speed these tests show, one of which is the ability of the speedtest server to keep up with your connection. I suggest this Maidenhead one is not up to the job. Try this one: http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ or this one: http://www.tenmeg.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ and see what you get. |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
Just so you guys know. I am on 10meg and I have performed speedtests with the same site that you have and the results have also come back as shoite. I then turn on my Newsleecher and DL something from newsgroups and always get 9meg and above.
Therefore that speedtest site isn't the most reliable. Just a thought! :erm::erm: Liam |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
speedtest.net and also the VM speedtest was showing my connection at about 3meg from 10meg yet newsgroups were downloading at close to 9meg i wonder which one im going to take as more accurate
speeds tests are not always a reliable guide didnt really read the above post lol but near enough identical |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
try to talk to the manager on the phone and hurl a load of problems that has occured to you >_<
|
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
well i don't use speed tests, my connection has been bad without trying speedtests. I know my connection has been crap due to downloading from various sites like microsoft or various others as its far more reliable then speed tests
|
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
best off trying a news server as you are pretty much guaranteed full speed
|
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
Don't use maidenhead the server is pish.
If you must use speedtest.net use London. Better still use this utility to get a better idea of the true performance. |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!

how can you be guaranteed full speed if you're internet runs on a par with dial up? |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
it bypasses the proxies which are used for opening web pages, if the proxy is having issues then so will web pages
newsgroups allow more than 1 single connection which is what a browser would use for downloading a file |

This is more like it at 8:48pm, not bad since I've just booted up the computer so have not been using it since the morning when I left for work. And don't forget the Nottingham area hasn't been graced with the 20Mb upgrade yet so there is no TM in place. |

I do the test only when I get bad connection. I don't care if I have 2.5M instead of 4M as long as my connection is stable and I have decent pings. Like tonight. I didn't post the test, although it was 1.3M!!!!!! instead of 4M but latency was OK 63 I think and I could do what I wanted to do. That matters. At the end of the day I do not need 4M, however I do need a stable connection but virgin fails completely to deliver a decent service. I started to experience problems starting from April. ---------- Post added at 21:26 ---------- Previous post was at 21:25 ---------- Right now: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2007/06/63.png ---------- Post added at 21:27 ---------- Previous post was at 21:26 ---------- Down is 1/2 but latency is good and it's what that matters. |

Then you are not smart enough. Sorry about it. Whenever I have a problem or bad ping in the game speed test clearly supports it. Moreover, its down is always the same as speed test here on the forum, the only reason why I use it instead of the forum's test because I can see latency and up. Down is the same on both tests, so it is pretty accurate. Now...if you are saying that the test here is crap as well, I start to wonder who is this clever guy who still keeps it here??? |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
I think people use speedtest.net as a basis because they can show a nice piccy to prove that they are not lying.
It doesn't mean that they don't use other forms of speed testing like downloading iso's or other speed testing software. |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
Frankly speaking his claim that the test is crap and people who mention it here have nothing to do but pay money for the Internet only to come here and complain reminds me of poor excuse for bad service and when there is nothing one can say what is the best line of defence? Right, it is an attack.

Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
And as if on cue I arrive and say Chill Out People ;)
As has been pointed out, speed tests can be a useful indicator, but they can also be flawed. |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
Speed tests from Speedtest.net can be an indicator, but that's about all they are useful for - you are not just testing the speed of your connection, but the speed of their server, and all the network in between - much of which is not VM's network (and indeed is across the atlantic in the US).
Our speedtest (linked at the top of the page) will give you a better indication as it is located on the VM network - you are still testing more than just your connection, but at least you are internal to the VM network so the results are a better indicator of your actual performance. Remember that all speed tests (inc ours) are just rough estimates, not accurate measurements. |

I've never had a complaint about my BB service. Always been top notch. Well done VM :tu: |
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
What is it with people and speed tests they are to say the least unreliable at the best of times especially once it leaves the vm network as they have no control over other networks plus a multitude of other variables to be taken into conideration, contrary to popular belief the servers that the tests are going to they do not have an unlimited connection the majaority are using a 100mb card and if 100 people are doing the speeed test at the same time then you will get a false reading. I would reccomend doing a tracert to the server aswell to see where the problem starts to arise and if it is inside the vm network then by all means moan and groan about it.
|
Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
Cue a tracert results thread over 100 pages long? ;)

Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
well after 4 or 5 weeks of only getting about half of my 10mb line i just ran the test from this site again and it seems in just about back to normal..
i hope it stays like this! https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2007/06/62.png |

Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
With ntl I never had 4M down. 2.6M was the best result. However the line was stable and latency was good. I never complained. Starting from April everything went downhill and gets worse.
Speaking to some members of this forum feels like a conversation between blind and deaf. Why some of you are concentrating on pointing out that the speed tests are not accurate despite the fact that I am saying that I go and test my connection when I experience problems such as bad ping in a game or snail speed at external news server provider and the tests prove that there is a problem. When I have done those tests just out of curiosity when I didn't have those problems the speed test didn't show any problems as well. So, based on my experience those speed tests might not be accurate but they are a VERY good indication that there is a problem and noone can deny it. |

Re: Excellent speeds. Well done Virgin!
Good latency tonight, so I am happy bunny.
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2007/06/56.png Another interesting thing happened tonight. I have just received a phone call from VM and they offered me for 41 quid: phone line + 20M BB + free tv box with some TV package...and if my modem cannot support 20M it will be swapped for free.... That's interesting, because atm I pay £11 for phone line + £25 BB + about £4-6 for local calls. All together £41 but slower BB and no digi TV at all. Does it mean that for the same money I am going to get so much more? I am very curious :Yikes: |
