Looks like this has been going on long enough.

you need to open an administrative command prompt, to do this

Start, All Programs, Accessories RIGHT CLICK on Command Prompt and then LEFT CLICK on 'Run as Administrator'

type in the commands below EXACTLY

netsh int reset all
netsh winsock reset

The first command won't tell you anything has been done, the second will tell you that you need to reboot. Do so, then tell me if you can connect properly.

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!

I would try deleting any drivers for network connections, wired and wireless, then reboot the computer and reload. Every probablility that with the reinstall on a new Hard Disk the drivers are missing or corrupted.

Right click on Compuer / My Computer in the start menu and select properties. From there open the device manager. You should then be able to expand any network adapter and uninstall them. When you reboot the computer it should find new hardware and prompt you for the drivers.

Have you tried using system restore to take it back to a date when it all seemed to work fine? Worth a try.

Done and no, no change, still cannot get beyond 'Unidentified Network' in Network and Sharing Center.

Is that the Network Key supplied by Sky with the router? If so, yes.

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!

ok, I need the IPV4 and Default Gateway addresses from one of the working machines, also try

ipconfig /flushdns on the laptop having problems.

we are going to try a manual IP assignment for the machine, the problem seems to be it is not receiving a DHCP assignment from the router, let's see if it works when we manually define it's addresses.

If it takes me a couple of minutes to reply it's because I am working on an iphone 3g currently, taking it up to 4.0.1, then the usual modifications and getting it working with giffgaff.

It may well come to that, but if I can use the expertise on here to try and get it going before sending it back then I would prefer that as it takes ages for them to do anything.......................

So, on my PC, running XP I look at the LAN settings and see

IP Address: 192.168.0.2

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Is that what you needed?

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!

1 Attachment(s)
got this from sony pdf
User manual SONY VAIO VGN-NR38S/S

What should I do if my computer cannot connect to a wireless LAN access point?
❑ Connection availability is affected by distance and obstructions. You may need to move your computer away from
obstructions or closer to any access point you may be using.
❑ Make sure the WIRELESS or WIRELESS LAN switch is on and the Wireless LAN indicator is lit on your computer.
❑ Make sure power to the access point is on.
❑ Follow these steps to check the settings:
1 Click Start and Control Panel.
2 Click View network status and tasks under Network and Internet.
3 Click Connect to a network to confirm that your access point is selected.
❑ Make sure the encryption key is correct.
❑ Make sure Maximum Performance is selected for Wireless Adapter Settings in the Power Options window. Selecting
any other option may result in a communication failure. To change the settings, follow these steps:
1 Right-click the power status icon on the taskbar and select Power Options.
2 Click Change plan settings under the current power plan.
3 Click Change advanced power settings.
The Power Options window appears.
4 Select the Advanced settings tab.
5 Double-click Wireless Adapter Settings and Power Saving Mode.
6 Select Maximum Performance from the drop-down list both for On battery and Plugged in.

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!

Exactly what I needed, ok, we are going to give the network adapter on the machine a manually assigned IP

Go to network and sharing center, click on 'manage wireless networks', then click your wireless connection and click on 'adapter properties'.

When it is showing the various protocols, doubleclick 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPV4)'

Click 'use the following IP address'

192.168.0.168

Subnet mask should automatically fill in as 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway is 192.168.0.1

Leave the DNS server entry alone for the moment.

See if that gets the wireless connection online.

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!

Ok,

done that and now I have a pop-up window saying that 'Windows has detected an IP address conflict', and still can't get on t'internet....

Thanks Vanman, but I think that is if the laptop is not connecting to the router.....which mine is! It just won't go onto the internet from there.....

Cheers

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!

try 192.168.0.250 as an IP then

Re: Can't get my laptop onto the internet!

Tried to no avail. When I look at the network it says 'Local Only' under access. does this have a bearing on it (i.e. does local only mean 'not internet')?
