everyones so impatient - atleast you have some kind of upgrade! But i do sympathise that some will get full rate while you may not, but when the time comes - Ntl will sort us all out. Resources will be stretched a bit thin while this is rolled out.

Just don't break perfectly good equipment just to get the latest and greatest. - Btw I've got an Ntl100 box on 2Mb am happy with the speed, just want un-metered.

The speed achievable by the Samsung STB is still being tested. The 10Mb tier has not been released for STBs until testing is complete.

My NTL Home 200 modem is only doing between 5/6 MB...not the full 10MB here in Cambridge (CB4)

Sounds right (about it not being able to handle it) as I can't get the 10mb, more 6mb

Well I know about 5 people with an ntl:200 on 10mb working at full speed (all within 10miles of Sandy where I live). So it might well be an area problem as you say.

I was in the same situation so I called TS and told them that i've spilt coffee on mine and the PCB was fried and needed an engineer to come out and install a new one.

If you own the modem then just stop using it and Ntl will have to kit you out with a modem or lose you as a customer.

I've got an engineer booked for monday. Just hoping they install a NTL 250 modem.

i bet there is a firmware upgrade before year end, if not then there is going to be alot of NTL customers paying for something that they haven't actually got.

Maybe this is NTL's new way of managing their network, give you a free speed upgrade and then blame the network for your slower than 10meg BB when infact its the modem, i wouldn't put it past them

Hi

I'm new to the forums! :waving:

A point about the sb4100. I have a 100mbit LAN card on my motherboard, connected to my SB4100. It registers as connected at
100mbit/s, so maybe it's just peoples cards/routers that are the problem with this modem?. See image

Re: Which modems work on 10mbit ?

Hello Everyone,

New to the forum but will let you know what I have been told by ntl Customer Services.

I had my broadband upgraded from 3MB to 10MB on Wednesday. I am currently only getting 5MB Down but full speed Up. I am using a ntl:120 modem.

As I am moving house next week, but still staying in same area, I asked about having a new ntl:250 modem installed when the engineer comes to connect my service at the new house, as I am not getting the full 10MB Down. The Customer Service Rep said that everyone with a ntl:120 modem will be getting a new ntl:250 modem as they are not releasing any firmware updates. These new modems will be released in batches but Cust Servs were unable to say when they would start delivering the new modems, but did say it would be this year if you are currently on the 3MB service.

Hope this all makes some sense to some people.

Word around the forum is that the 120 modems can't handle the full 10meg.

Some have called ntl and had it swapped out with a 250 and that has sorted it..

or maybe they decided to press on with the upgrades anyway since people would still be getting faster speeds, and they can upgrade/swap modems as necessary. Remember that only the existing 3M customers are due to be upgraded this year, that's less than 10% of BB customers.

True but the CS rep obviously didnt think that when he downgraded me again, this whole experience has left a bitter taste in my mouth especially as I am now reading dozens of people did the same as me and got a new modem as a result.

I already said I spoke them if you missed it sorry, they the ones who tried to reupgrade me after I got downgraded but the system wouldnt let them do it.

Or did you mean ring them again and ask for the modem so I have it ready for when I can upgrade again?

I just found this on another good forum... posted by an NTL EMPLOYEE (Senior Tech support)

Quote:

Ok I have tried to read most of the topics on this but there are a few and looks like a lot of you guys are getting conflicting or "my mate down the pub told me" information

Ok here goes
  • All modems can support 10meg speed including motorola and teryons
  • The Sam stb can also get the 10meg speed just no config file has been created yet
  • The PACE can not support it and will need to be swapped to a modem
  • The speed is an "up to 10meg" you may not get it but you will still get at least 3meg
  • This is currently a trial and not all areas can fully support 10 meg hence the up to bit
  • All 3 meg customer will be upgraded by the end of the year 1meg and 2meg to follow but no date yet
Hope this helps to answer some of the question anymore just post them and i'll answer what I can
Sorry if this may have been already posted elsewhere on this forum. :o:

I have the TJ210 and I get about 8Mbit connection speed. I think it has more to do with available capacity locally, or perhaps a faulty modem in your case. As I've said before, no one will really know how much their modem can handle until the service is fully enabled and all exchanges are running at full speed.

Not wrong just answering a different question. The modems don't keel over and die, they just gracefully limit the maximum to something greater than the current maximum 3Mb and achieve something "up to 10Mb".

In normal use the user is not going to notice much difference between 5 and 10Mbps maximum speed- its even hard finding a speedtest site capable of generating enough bandwidth! In most cases the modem won't be the slowest link in the chain.

And if you intend to fileshare at 10Mbps continuously - how many hours/days before you exceed the 75gig limit?

Mauldor 12-11-2005 16:24

Re: Which modems work on 10mbit ?

The SB 4100 has a 10/100mbit port. If I connect it to my Router only the 10mbit comes on, this makes sense as the router only has a 10mbit port fitted to it. Now if I connect direct to my PC, the 10 & 100mbit light comes on which means it operating (in theory) at the full speed.

Now the problem i have is that on 2mbit I got a pretty constant speed on downloads and now that i have "gone on this trail" it can vary from 1mbit to 8mbit depending on what speed test I do and at what time. Downloading files from UK Server with 1000mbit links is very erractic indeed and can get as low as 36kB/sec where as before i upgraded it was always constant at about 200+ no problems.

After a long chat with TS, my theory is that a few factors are coming into play, everyone who is getting the 10mbit is downloading and thus flooding the network - this been to test out there new speed. The other thing is they may well be working on the back end (as TS said) and this also could account for the problems.

My plan is bascially sit tight for say 1 month (mid Dec) and see what happens in regards the speeds of my SB4100, if it sticks at 4mbit then they said they will replace the modem with a NTL250 Model..

EDIT - Just did various other Speed tests and my theory is correct I think, I am getting Speeds ranging from 1mbit to 8mbit so this would say the SB4100 can handle the 10mbit no problems...

Paul is right, in that case they not getting upto 10mbps they getting upto "what the modem can handle" and in some cases people are getting drops as a result of pushing the modem to its limit for long periods.

Your modem should be able to do 10Mbit however it'll need a firmware upgrade from what i've read on this forum which isn't available yet.

Is the upgrade something they can do automatically, or will they have to send us a disk?

Re: Which modems work on 10mbit ?

Hi there.

I currently use a surfboard SB3100 cable modem, I had this when I first became an NTL customer about 5 years ago when the very first 512kbps broadband service was released. I have been on the 3meg service since it started and was pleased to hear that 10meg would soon be available. I thought I would re-boot my modem and see what speeds I was going to get in the hope that my area had been upgraded. My max download rate from Microsoftâ₠¬â„¢s servers early in the mooring (when not many people are on the net) was maxing out at around 670kbps. I done a speed test and it was about the same, my upload was around 55kbps. I was a bit worried about this and thought that my modem was at fault. I have been looking for some firmware updates but none are available to date. It does appear that my modem will NOT support the full 10meg speed.
A friend of mine has just sold his house and is changing to a BT line, he has given me his old Motorola SB5100i cable modem. I was wondering if I could use this instead of my SB3100 and if NTL would register the new modem? If not I will have to ring up CS and ask if they will do an upgrade modem for me.
The last time I rang CS I was put through to this guy who told me the SB 3100 would take the 10meg speed, he obviously does not really know the facts.
Any advice would be much appreciated on this one guys.
Steve

No you can't use the SB5100i. Your best bet is to try and get them to replace the SB3100. Not sure what the best method of doing that is. You could always threaten to leave unless they supply you with a modem thats capable of getting 10mbit. I could only get 5-6mbit on my SB3100 until i got it changed.

If your not successful on your first call to TS keep trying and don't give up.

Good luck! :)

I have the same modem and a linksys bfr router and it does 10mb no problems 9.8 in the newsgroups most of the time anyway.

Rang ntl up today and ask them if i have been upgraded and they said yes to 10mbit
im using the silver modem ntl200
Download speeds are still 3mbit around 350-360kb/s

So am i the only one with a ntl200 thats not working or is there a fault

Killerv, i am using the same modem via ethernet and rang up a few weeks ago to get upgraded to 10mbit.

Atm the speeds i am getting during the day are around 3.5mbps and right now(ringing cs right now) am getting a paltry 1.5mbps down!! and as the auto upgrades are being rolled out i would have thought i would be getting much higher speeds as im not even getting the 3mbps down i was before the upgrade!!

Ahh just spoke to cs and then ts(even though the ts guy was abit abrupt and sounded fed up to be there..) he said that adsl speed tests are inacurrate and should try to download say a large game or patch file and see what speeds i get then.

The download speeds i got the where at first 1.16mb/sec(10bmps) to 792kb/sec(7.5-8bmps.) so i am getting the correct download speeds so ive learnt that those kind of speed tests above are inacurrate..:-).
