I am BT and if i change to virgin phone will my phone number change?

It will change unless you ask for the number to be ported over, and your remaining in the same area i.e. Virgin Media and BT use the same area codes.

as said in 99.9% of cases the BT number can be retained if you request this.

You'll be able to port your number over without a problem. It'll take about a week max.

Yes make sure you keep your BT phone number! Because if you ever want to go to a provider that uses a BT line like Tiscali or TalkTalk then a Virgin number will not be accepted as Virgin is not obliged to route calls.

Legally it should take 5 days, if it takes longer then you can make a complaint and request a goodwill payment or discount.

Make sure that Virgin has your BT details (account no etc) absolutely correct. BT appears to take any excuse to refuse to transfer the phone number. Mine was held up because of an error in the postcode.
