Jaguar Land Rover to cut up to 5,000 jobs in UK

Not good news for some Jaguar Land Rover workers today sadly.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will today announce it is cutting up to 5,000 jobs from its 40,000 strong UK workforce.

The layoffs are part of a £2.5bn cost-cutting plan amid what industry insiders have called a "perfect storm".

I feel sorry for the workers, but having owned 3 JLR cars previously in our household they need to up their game significantly both in terms of build quality and also their dealer service (the latter being completely shocking) it's not a marque I'm prepared to move back too

Having most of their eggs in the diesel market they've been hit hard by the VW emissions scandal and the new EU diesel emissions standards. China also seem to be falling out of love with the marque.

As mentioned above their build quality is attrocious with Range Rover models consistently being in the bottom ten for returns and faults. If Nissan in Sunderland can produce top quality product using British workers why can't JLR?

I was going to say RR specifically my wife had an evoque and the list of issues with it was ridiculous. Dealers saying software updates would fix it, never did. ended up rejecting the car and had to get legal action involved to complete the rejection.

It's a very interesting point you raise about the difference between Nissan & JLR I'd love to know why that's the case !

That is a good question as l wonder how good their levels of quality control are within JLR.

It never ceases to amaze me how car dealerships continue to behave as if the Sale of Goods Act doesn’t apply to them.

You buy a new car, it’s not as advertised or fit for purpose, you’re entitled to a refund.

Not good news as it would not surprise me if some jobs were cut in the UK especially at Bridgend.

Would the trend towards leasing have an impact? Makes people 'afford' more expensive cars which would impact the likes of Ford who do well on the moderately priced sector? Doesn't explain Land Rover I guess..

An interesting thought, but not sure tbh I dont lease cars so I'm not au fait with the ins and outs

Some of fords problems will stem from them losing the contract to supply engines to JLR (i think that's in the BBC link) also diesel etc etc.

It would interesting to see if leasing causes people to go for higher value cars, obviously people still had car loans before which inclines them to spend more as 'it's only a bit more each month' but with leasing you don't even have that total amount factoring it. It's like any other subscription.

I read a month ago about how JLR had called in consultants and the details of the restructure would be announced in January. The essence seemed to be that the company had expanded too quickly so costs were a bit out of control, had too many similar models and had not replaced its key Defender model.

On top of these internal issues, it was also facing increased costs from Brexit, the public's move away from Diesel and the trade wars which had squashed the Chinese premium car market which had been propping up the company.

They also hedged their bets on moving some of the production to China to reduce costs. From what's been said on BBC news today that the Chinese have been turning their noses up at Jaguars built in China and have instead been turning to cheaper, local brands. So if they're going to stump up the premium for a Jaguar or Land Rover they want one that's been built here.

Closer to home they are never going to compete with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. Look at the XF for instance in the large, executive saloon space: While it's a really good car overall your choice of petrol engines is limited to a 4 banger being flogged within an inch of it's life. People who buy luxury cars do actually care what's under the hood!

There's no hybrid either which seems to be the latest fad despite the fact that they are completely pointless and expensive folly unless people actually use them properly and the bit you actually charge up is supported by green energy.

Look at the Mercedes E class and the CLS for example: You can have a 4 pot if you must but you can have a V6 or a really tasty straight six with a mixed (supercharger > turbocharger) induction chain.

The fact that JLR opened a plant in Nitra, Slovakia employing approx 2.5k staff instead of expanding it's workforce in Solihull has nothing to do with the current 'situation'
