I don't usually advocate this, but in Tommy's case it might be best to chop his goolies off. He'd probably be a very nice person after that and take up gardening/crochet ....

Far-right activist Tommy Robinson has been jailed for 18 months after admitting contempt of court by repeating false claims against a Syrian refugee.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, admitted 10 breaches of a High Court order made in 2021 during a hearing at Woolwich Crown Court.

Lawyers for the solicitor general accused the 41-year-old of "undermining" the rule of law.

Passing sentence, Judge Mr Justice Johnson said the breaches of the injunction, which prevented Yaxley-Lenon from repeating the allegations he made, were not “accidental, negligent or merely reckless” and the custodial threshold was "amply crossed”.

Robinson could only serve 14 months if he “purges” his contempt, such as by removing the film from his X account, the judge added. When told this, Robinson shook his head and appeared to say “nah”.

There’s nothing conflicting about any of that. The sentence is 18 months, and may be reduced to 14 months if he undoes his contempt as far as is within his power.

How much of his sentence is behind bars and how much is out on licence is a separate issue. It’s usually 50% of the total sentence.

He will be eligible for release from jail on a tag after serving less than four months of his 18-month sentence under the Government’s early release scheme to tackle the prison overcrowding crisis.

The scheme means he is entitled to automatic release after serving 7.2 months of his sentence. This is because it has moved the release date to require offenders to serve just 40 per cent of their sentence in prison rather than half of it.

Even before the 40 per cent point is reached, offenders can be released half way through their jail time under what is known as a home detention curfew.

This would entitle him to release on home detention curfew – where offenders are tagged under curfews normally of 12 hours from 7pm to 7am in their homes – after serving 20 per cent of his total sentence, or 3.6 months.

Home detention curfew is not, however, an automatic right and can only be granted at the discretion of the governor, who has to decide if the criminal is low risk and unlikely to reoffend.

IIRC when the judge starts talking about time on licence he is setting expectations about how much time the prisoner can expect to be incarcerated rather than setting inviolable conditions.

Either way, the sentence is 18 months, reducible to 14 if he decides to stop holding the court in contempt, and tonight Are Tommy will be enjoying a cavity search followed by a lumpy mattress.

Whether he’s locked up for 6,7 or 9 months makes little difference in the grand scheme of things … he will be on licence for another 8 or 9 months thereafter and liable to be returned to prison without any further trial if he misbehaves.
