New one stop service for GOV.UK unveiled

From past working experience as a Civil Servant, different Government Deparments have been able to exchange/compare/pass on information they hold about claimants /users for a relatively long time so I guess the public being able to have such a one step access point could simplify people's lives.

However, having dealt with the reams of information being passed between departments, and seeing the systems shortcomings I do hope this will not be a good idea brought down by the people who build the dang thing.
Quote:
Plans to make it easier for the public to access online government services via an app have been set out today by Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Steve Barclay.

The plans mean that the public will no longer have to remember multiple usernames and passwords to access services such as free school meals, support for disabled family members and changing driver licence details in the future.

The new app will allow people to access services much more easily, instead of having to go through multiple online processes. It will give users the option to use the technology in their smartphones to quickly access government services online via GOV.UK.

Currently, there are 191 different ways for people to set up a variety of accounts to access different services on GOV.UK, with 44 different sign-in methods.

I would rather have you doing the job in your garden shed than let someone, who "knows" someone who once successfully managed to switch on a computer, get the contract to make a obscenely large One Stop deposit into their bank account.

Re: New one stop service for GOV.UK unveiled

I can't even access my pension forecast on the gov.uk site as I don't have a passport and mobile phone contract to pass the security.

It’s two factor authentication - they send you a six digit code to confirm it’s you.

Re: New one stop service for GOV.UK unveiled

I have a Governmant Gateway ID which seems to be used for a lot of things.

(Had it for at least 10 years now).

Re: New one stop service for GOV.UK unveiled

I use the Gateway for my tax returns and I do have to admit it has worked well on most occasions.

The GOV.UK Verify process will still presumably be used to to give people the necessary proof of identity in order to use the One Step entry point and I am suspect that a fair number of people will stumble at this point. From personal experience trying to help a friend to do the same was a totally frustrating process. He doesn't drive so no driving licence, he has never ventured abroad so no passport. so no government approved photo proof of who he is. Snippet from one of the two verification providers...

Different services require different amounts of information to make sure you are who you say you are. As a minimum, we ask you to share your government ID to make sure you are who you say you are. It helps if you have either a passport, driving licence or national ID card.

You will be asked to send us this information through our online form or by uploading a photo of the document using our app.
.... and I just worry that, having jumped through the hoops in order to actually use this new app, having a single entry point will actually be counter productive when each Department will end up with multiple options which in turn lead to in further options and then finally, when you think you have reached that golden gateway, you will find that the dang program freezes/you're in the wrong area/you're informed, after answering a raft of questions, you need to speak to an actual person using a highly priced phone number. Of course you are number 1072390 in the phone queue and it is suggested you phone again later when lines are less congested and your phone call is terminated

....and breath. Maybe this will work. Maybe, but I'm not going to hold my breath, I'm too old for all this.

A provisional license will do the trick. Did it when granddaughter turned 18

I have tried that, but gave up after dozens of times on hold for over 30 minutes each time.

I also wrote to them a few months ago, but have not had an answer.
