Re: Channel 5 hd black and white Square
I noticed that, I think it's been on other channels.
I thought it was for pending adverts, but no.

The presence of the square may indicate that the Channel 5 broadcast is being transmitted by their backup facility. The mystery square could also suggest that the broadcast transmission is being run in disaster recovery mode

Re: Channel 5 hd black and white Square
It's to indicate the broadcast is being transmitted from a backup facility. There was a fire at the main broadcast hub for some of the channels so they're running on that for a bit.

The Last Leg was saying that it could go off at any time, but if it did they would still carry on, and it would be available via All4

Re: Channel 5 hd black and white Square
Channel 4 and Channel 5 are currently broadcasting playout from secret disaster recovery centres.
If anything happens to these, the affected channels will go off air.
They are having to rebuild everything and manually playout programmes in the meantime.

They’re not secret, they’re "commercially confidential" - different thing.

Commercially sensitive, certainly. A bit more than that though when it comes to DR playout. When broadcasters are using their DR backup sites, its fairly safe to assume that the backup site doesn't also have a backup site. A fairly precarious situation to be in. A very easy target for anyone wanting to wilfully disrupt the broadcast chain. A major security issue, especially now with 3 of the 4 public service broadcasters operating from disaster recovery sites. The location of the sites is relatively well known in the industry and that, in itself, is a potential problem. Are the site locations "secret"? possibly not as secret as they ought to be. There are national security issues involved. Probably not a good idea to announce these locations to a rogue state...

Re: Channel 5 hd black and white Square
Given that any 'rogue states' probably have very good info on the locations of 90% of our civil & military 'places of interest', I'd guess they may already know

Yeah but most places of interest are in regular use. Red Bee facilities are usually quite reliable and there is no need to switch out to DR other than for very short periods. They are likely to be largely unnoticed even within the organisations hosting them. I'm not so sure how long that will be the case now they have been dusted off and used for an extended period of time. That said, C4's DR is an end of life system, it might not even survive until the next time DR facilities are needed.
