Sherlock will return for a third series, its creators have revealed after a dramatic conclusion to the second run of the BBC One drama.

Ahead of series two, co-creator Steven Moffat told BBC News there was "no guarantee we'll be bringing him back".

But on Sunday night, Moffat wrote on Twitter: "Of course there's going to be a third series - it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!"

Great news in that we are getting another series.

Sherlock exec Beryl Vertue has confirmed shooting dates for the next series.

The detective drama will resume filming in "early 2013", the producer told the BBC's in-house magazine Ariel.

However, Vertue added that it is too early to confirm a transmission date for the new episodes

Looking forward to it.

If they shoot it in early 2013 it's not going to be on our screens until late that year or possibly even early in to 2014.

Just watched the first two series. Only have to wait 2 days to see how Sherlock faked his death . Hope they do a forth series however.

Good. I like the format of the show, three long episodes. They just need to do more of them. I see no reason, creativity wise, why they couldn't do a lot more episodes. Many a one-off every now and then.

They're making a feature film's worth in each episode, with two lead actors who are now big Hollywood names and busy and in demand. The series is also run by the same man who runs the most popular non-soap drama on British TV. Frankly, it's a miracle it gets made at all ...

Yeah. Personally given those circumstances I would be perfectly happy if, after the 4th season, if they simply did a feature length episode once a year or something. I wonder if it has the ability to be made into a movie franchise.

Well I think that a good series! Loved the end.

Spoiler: 

I am guessing that Moriarty has left a scheme and video recordings behind rather than reappearing back from the dead. Although that would be a shame as I liked his interaction with Sherlock and something feels sterile about Sherlock fighting a scheme whose mastermind is already gone.

Still loved the sudden twist. I just wish they play Staying Alive over the credits or simply had everyone looking at the TV with the music playing allowing you to put it together anyway.
