Premier League clubs 'should pay living wage' to staff

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49288182

Quote:
Premier League clubs have been urged to pay all staff above the minimum wage after spending £1.41bn on players.

Many cleaners, security guards, caterers and other staff do not earn enough money to cover the cost of living, the charity Citizens UK said.

It said only four out of 20 Premier League clubs are accredited by the Living Wage Foundation.
With the amount of money washing through this sport surely they can afford to pay a living wage to those who keep their clubs maintained and clean.

There should be no excuses for the Premier League clubs not paying all their staff a reasonable hourly rate above the minimum wage.

They can afford to give them a decent wage out of their daily pocket money.

Only one way to protest against such outfits. Don't give them any of your money either through the turnstiles, TV subs or merchandise. Instead go and support your local non league team in the FA Cup tomorrow !

I don't do that anyway. Sadly Pompey are still fighting their way back and are still in League One.

Why should l as l get it half price Mr K as do you really think a few protests are going to make one jot of difference to forcing football clubs to pay a decent wage to the staff who they employ as any responsible club should be doing that anyway.

Re: Premier League clubs 'should pay living wage' to staff

While i'm sure a lot of the clubs don't pay the living wage to their staff the article itself is nonsense. For example the quote from the cleaner saying United should pay more seeing how they make so much money and is struggling to put food on his table isn't actually employed by the club. He's employed by a cleaning company that they outsource to, the club actually pays it's own staff the living wage. Yes you could argue that they should hire a different cleaning company but good luck finding one in Manchester that pays their staff the living wage.

Them mentioning that only 4 out of 20 clubs being accredited by the Living Wage Foundation is also meaningless as there is zero obligation to do so. The Living Wage Foundation isn't some legal obligation it's a private company who want you to pay them to give you a shiny certificate that has no more weight than if you printed it up yourself. Very few companies who pay the living wage have it.

Why is that ?

What (for example) makes a cleaner at a premier league club worth more than one at a championship side ?

The Living Wage, sometimes referred to as the ‘Real’ Living Wage is an hourly rate based on the basic cost of living in the UK.

It’s calculated by the Living Wage Foundation, a campaigning organisation in the UK, and therefore has no legal grounding. The Living Wage for the UK is set at a recommended £9 per hour and for London at a recommended £10.55 per hour.

The national minimum wage is £8.21 p/h for anyone over 25

It does not as the OP was talking about Premier League clubs particularly but the same sentiment applies to all divisions of the football pyramid.
