Until the start of the month, if I made a call on my phone (a Sony Xperia L) it just called no fuss, now when I make a call it asks if I want to make a mobile or internet call. Is there a setting I can change to stop this happening as it is getting on my nerves.

Did you download an app that lets you make internet calls in the last month or so ?
Its probably because you set up internet calling. In the same place that you set it up there should be an option to ask or to use one mode by default. It should also have a button saying "Remember this choice" every time it asks, unless you're using a dumb app.
Take a screenshot of the offending dialog if you can't tell what app it is.
