Re: Films to see in 2020 / 2021

Not sure if said already but this has now made for a cracking 2021. Movie congestion, great for the consumer, likely terrible for the studio.

If I was running Cinema chains, I'd be getting some promotions on the go in anticipation, although a Cinema sub/pass doesn't seem like a bad shout for 2021.

I do wonder if we'll see even more reshuffling, less to covid but more for the congestion it's causing.

Re: Films to see in 2020 / 2021

There is no way next year's current schedule is going to stick. There are going to be further delays and i think next year's schedule is going to end up being this year's schedule.

Re: Films to see in 2020 / 2021

I think there may end up being some films that drop from cinema releases to premium VOD rentals.

I hope so because continuous delays will only work for so long and can't be done indefinitely. You can only build up so much of a back log before the release schedule becomes unviable. Some people like me/your die hard movie fans will go to the cinema every week if they pushed a blockbuster out every week due to this year's delays however the majority of people haven't got the time and/or money. Even if you release 4 massive films in a month, Joe Bloggs will only want to see one and the other three will lose out. So either way things aren't going to go as hoped for by the studios and if I was Disney for example, I would be looking at next year's schedule and thinking about which movies (Disney and MCU) I want to release at the cinema and what might be better as pay per view.

Re: Films to see in 2020 / 2021

I'm a die hard cinema goer too. I've had my Unlimited card since 2008. I was last at Cineworld the day they closed to see Akira 4k. I've been gutted at all the delays. I, when working would go on my days off to see a couple of films and since stopped working I used to go a couple of days a week.

As well as the massive backlog of movies there is also the effect of people loosing interest in films that should have been out and they were looking forward too. Films like Ghpstbusters Afterlife, it had a trailer and all the toys and merchandise were starting to come out. Now its delayed till next March I think. They will have to try hard to get people back on board as many studies may have already spent their budgets for advertising and merchandise etc.

It looks like Coming 2 America has already been moved to Amazon and so will not probably get its December cinema release. How many other movies will follow a similar route I wonder. Soul is another that is now set for streaming rather than big screen release. I wonder if Disney will do the same with some of the MCU such as Black Widow.

yeah they need to, I can't think of a more important franchise where you need to keep the momentum and excitement going between movies. I know they were probably hoping for $1bn plus for ScarJo's debut but they need to bite the bullet and move on and look forward to next year. You can't have all these years or 2-3 MCU films a year and then nothing all of a sudden.

The long-anticipated sequel to the Eddie Murphy classic is in the process of being sold by distributor Paramount Pictures to Amazon Studios, in a deal worth roughly $125 million, insiders said. The expected streaming premiere date is December 18, sources added.
