Russia amassing troops on Ukrainian border
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56616778
Hopefully just a bit of game playing by Putin to see what NATO/America does....

Re: Russia amassing troops on Ukrainian border
If anything, it is Putin that has reacted to NATO actions.

Between January and March 2020, US Army Europe deployed approximately 6,000 military personnel from the United States to Europe. It moved some 9,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment, many from prepositioned stock locations in Europe, and around 3,000 pieces of equipment across the Atlantic. To give an idea, this is the third-largest military exercise in Europe since the Cold War. In coordination with Allies and partners, US Army Europe also moved soldiers and equipment from multiple European ports and airports to training areas in Germany and Poland.

On September 4, the American B-52s entered the airspace of Ukraine for the first time in history, where they made a long flight along the borders of the Crimean peninsula, thus demonstrating an unprecedented disregard and aggressive behavior towards Moscow.[10]
On Sep. 25, two U.S. bombers staged a mock attack run on Russia’s territory in Eastern Europe. The flight path allowed the bombers effectively to fly a circle around Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic between Poland and Lithuania. The simulated raid on the Kaliningrad region was a test case of destroying Russian air defense systems located in the region.[11]
Altogether, in August-September 2020, American nuclear weapons carriers flew at least 18 times to Russia's northern, western and southern borders during the operation, which is an unprecedented event since the end of the Cold War.[12]

Re: Russia amassing troops on Ukrainian border
supposition, as those occurred six months to a year ago...
Meanwhile, from the linked article, things that Russia are actually doing now.
Quote:
Russia has warned Nato against sending any troops to help Ukraine, amid reports of a large Russian military build-up on its borders
|
Quote:
a build-up of Russian military at the northern border between Ukraine and Russia, along the eastern border and "also in the illegally occupied Crimea".
"So from three directions we observed a military build-up of the Russian federation,"
|
Quote:
Western governments say Russia has deployed regular troops there, along with heavy weapons. That is denied by the Kremlin, which says Russian "volunteers" are helping the rebels
|
Quote:
Russia has deployed 28 battalion tactical groups near Ukraine's eastern border and in Crimea, which would amount to 20,000-25,000 troops.

Hmm, Spring to March 2020. I think over a year is hard to call a reaction!
The driver is more likely to be an attempt to increase Putin's popularity within Russia.

NATO aircraft routinely approach Russia borders, and are based in neighbouring countries, eg Belarus.

NATO bases in Belarus? Which is how your post reads.

Belarus is firmly within Russia's grip. I doubt there are any NATO bases there. Do you have a link?

Re: Russia amassing troops on Ukrainian border
Well . . it was eventually going to be either the Russians or Americans.
https://emerging-europe.com/voices/t...ergy-reserves/
Quote:
If one counts the gas reserves in the Asian part of Russia as being outside Europe, then Ukraine holds today the second biggest known European gas reserves. As of late 2019, the by then explored Ukrainian repositories contained 1.09 trillion cubic metres of natural gas. This is a deposit that is, within Europe, next only to Norway’s known resources of 1.53 trillion cubic metres.
Yet Ukraine’s enormous reserves of energy remain so far largely untapped. Ukraine has, until now, only a low rate of annual reserve usage, of about two per cent. Moreover, more active than hitherto exploration of yet undiscovered gas fields might further increase the overall volume of Ukraine’s deposits – perhaps even significantly so.
